Jean-Michel Sénégal

Jean-Michel Sénégal (born June 5, 1953 in Lyon ) is a former French basketball coach and player.

career

player

As a teenager, he won the French championship four times with the offspring from ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne until 1972. He won the title with the ASVEL men in 1971 and 1972, in 1974 the 1.84-meter-long formation player switched to ASPO Tours and, unlike in Lyon-Villeurbanne, was immediately the leading player there. In the 1974/75 season, in which he was runner-up with Tours, he scored 18.4 points per encounter. In the playing years 1975/76 and 1979/80 he won the French championship with the team and was involved with 19.5 and 21.3 points per game, respectively.

In 1981 Sénégal moved from Tours to the Cercle Saint-Pierre Limoges and stayed there until 1986. With Limoges he became French champions in 1983, 1984 and 1985. His scores were lower than his time in Tours at CSP, his highest score in Limoges reached Sénégal during the 1983/84 season (13.9 / game). In 1978, 1983 and 1984 he was the best passer in the French league, in 1983/84 he also got his best mark when he gave 9.5 assists per game.

On the European stage, he won the Korać Cup with Limoges in 1982 and 1983 . For the 1982 final victory against KK Šibenka Šibenik to Dražen Petrović , Senegal contributed ten points. 1983 both teams faced each other again in the final of the European club competition, Sénégal and Limoges won again. The playmaker had five points in his second triumph against Šibenik, in both years his teammate Ed Murphy excelled in the finals with 35 and 34 points respectively. At the end of his playing career Sénégal was in the service of Racing Paris in the 1986/87 season .

National team

Sénégal played 210 international matches for France between 1973 and 1984, in which he posted 971 points. He took part in the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1973, 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1983 European Championships.

Trainer

In 1987 he switched from playing to coaching at Racing Basket. He stayed there until 1989, after which he was in charge of the CRO Lyon team from 1989 to 1994 and Montpellier Paillade Basket in 1994/95. His other coaching stations: Cercle Saint-Pierre Limoges (1995/96), JAV Vichy (1999 to 2005), Hyères Toulon Var Basket (2005/06), JL Bourg-en-Bresse (2007/08), ASM Basket Le Puy Haute -Loire (2009/10), AS Monaco (2010 to 2013). Until 2015 he was still active in youth work in Monaco before he announced his departure from basketball.
