Paul Joseph Burke (born August 2, 1972 in Wyncote , Pennsylvania ) is a native American basketball coach and former player. After studying in his home country, Burke came to Europe as a professional player, where he initially played in the top leagues in Sweden and Great Britain . After marrying a Swede, he received Swedish citizenship in 2000 and, as a result of the Bosman decision, also played in Germany , Italy and Spain . With the Telekom Baskets from Bonn he became German runner-up in 2001 and won the FIBA EuroCup Challenge in 2004 with the Mitteldeutscher BC . In 2006 he returned to his second home Sweden and became a trainer with the Norrköping Dolphins.

Career

Burke went in 1991 from the "Prep School" ( German  preparatory school ) "Chestnut Hill Academy" to La Salle University , which is also in Philadelphia . There he played for the college team Explorers in the NCAA , which he also led as team captain from the third year . In 1992 the Explorers won the championship tournament of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and then eliminated in the first round of the NCAA national finals against the favored Pirates of Seton Hall University . The next three years they played in the later than Horizon League known Midwestern Collegiate Conference , in which one but could reach no championships or national Appearances. By 2010, Burke ranked with his college career achievements within the Explorers as the third-best template giver and fourth-best ball thief of all time.

After Burke was not selected in the NBA Draft , he was in 1995 by Bill Magarity sr. , who also went to school in Philadelphia, was brought to Sweden to the Dolphins from Norrköping , where the Swedish naturalized Magarity sr. had taken over his first post as a coach. However, Magarity left the club and worked as a coach in Germany for the next four years, while Burke moved to Malmö for a season at Skåne BBK in 1996 . In November 1998 he also completed individual games in the British Basketball League for the Greater London Leopards. In the 1999/2000 season Burke stood as a player with the Dolphins and Magarity sr. as the coach of the master Plannja Basket Lulea in the Svenska Basketligan opposite. While Plannja Basket was able to defend the championship title, Burke was named the best player of the season in the Swedish league. After marrying a Swede, Burke was now also naturalized , which, as a result of the Bosman decision , gave him the opportunity to sign lucrative contracts in higher-quality European leagues that were previously denied to him as an American because of the restrictions on use.

For the 2000/01 basketball Bundesliga , Burke was signed by Telekom Baskets from Bonn , which at the end of the season reached the final series of the championship play-offs for the third time in five years, but lost again to the then series champion ALBA Berlin . Then they tried to put up with a coaching change new ideas, but in the following 2001/02 season is eliminated already in the semifinal series against the New Rhenish rivals Rhein Energy Cologne from which a potent promoted under former national coach and Berlin Master coach Svetislav Pešić the league stirred up. For the season 2002/03 Burke finally signed a contract in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A with the club Snaidero from Udine , which he left at the end of February 2003 and moved to the Spanish ACB league to Lucentum from Alicante , where he played his American Compatriot Chris Corchiani replaced, who had previously played at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the Rhineland. The first division return from Alicante reached the championship play-offs for the first time as a climber, in which they were eliminated in the first round against the eventual title winners FC Barcelona . Then Burke took part with the Swedish national team in the European Championship 2003 , for which one had automatically qualified as a host. However, Sweden retired without a win after the preliminary round.

For the basketball Bundesliga 2003/04 Burke was brought to the Central German BC in Weißenfels by Henrik Dettmann from Finland , whom he had taken over as a former German national coach. But the Weißenfelser had taken over financially when signing well-known players like Wendell Alexis , Stephen Arigbabu and Misan Nikagbatse and had to file for bankruptcy during the season, which is why they were relegated after their license withdrawal. Before that, however, they won the FIBA EuroCup Challenge , the fourth and relatively insignificant European club competition, which was only held four times. At the Final Four tournament in Izmir , JDA Dijon won in the final . Nevertheless, after ALBA Berlin won the Korać Cup in 1995 , this was only the second title win by a German club team in a European competition. After the end of the season, Burke moved to the previous league competitor EWE Baskets from Oldenburg . With this team he reached the championship play-offs twice, each of which was eliminated in the first round. In 2006 Burke returned to his second home, Norrköping, Sweden, where he initially worked as a coaching assistant for the first men's team, but until 2009 still completed individual appearances as a player in the top division.

Already in the 2008/09 season Burke acted as head coach of the first men's team of the Norrköping Dolphins, but was then in the following two years coach of the women's team of the club in the "Dambasketligan". In the 2011/12 season Burke then took over the post of head coach of the first men's team.
