Bogdan Bogdanović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Богдан Богдановић ; born August 18, 1992 in Belgrade ) is a Serbian basketball player . From 2014 to 2017 he played in Turkey for Fenerbahçe Ülker , with whom he won the EuroLeague in 2017 . The national player then moved to the NBA and has since played for the Sacramento Kings . Following his debut season in the NBA ( 2017/18 ), Bogdanović was elected to the All-Rookie Second Team .

Career

Bogdanović moved in his youth in 2008 from KK Zvezdara to KK Žitko, with whose junior team he defeated local rivals KK Partizan, whose men's team dominated the national championship at the time, in the quarter-finals of the Serbian championship. After finishing third in the end, Bogdanović played for a Belgrade selection in the jersey of KK FMP Železnik at the Next Generation Tournament of the ULEB Euroleague , in which the team finished second as the defending champion after the final defeat against the home team INSEP in Paris.

With the Serbian youth national team as defending champion, he lost the semi-finals at the U18 European Championship finals in 2010 after a clear lead in the final quarter against the host and eventual title winner Lithuania with one point difference. After giving away a medal after the clear defeat in the game for third place against Latvia, one year later they moved into the final at the U19 World Cup in Latvia, in which this time the U18 European champion and new junior world champion Lithuania to MVP Jonas Valančiūnas this time clearly defeated.

At that time, Bogdanović was already playing for Partizan after he moved to the men's series championship in 2010 after the U18 European Championship finals. After Partizan was eliminated in the top-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2010/11 after just one win in six games in the intermediate round, the team was able to defend the triple of the national championship and cup competition as well as the supranational Adriatic basketball league (ABA league) at the end of the season .

In the following season 2011/12 , however, the visiting team Maccabi Tel Aviv won the title of the "Adria League" when Partizan had already failed in the semifinals for the sixth title in a row. After failing in the ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 after the preliminary round, it was enough for a national double again .

With the junior selection, Bogdanović missed another medal at the U20 European Championship finals in 2012, when they entered the semifinals without defeat, but again lost to Lithuania, this time without Valančiūnas, and Spain with a point difference in the game for third place. A further strongly rejuvenated team from Partizan lost the decisive final group game under coach returnees Duško Vujošević for a place in the intermediate round of the ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 only after extra time against the German champions Brose Baskets . In the ABA League 2012/13 without Maccabi, Partizan was able to take back the title as fourth in the main round in the Final Four tournament and also won the final series of the championship against local rivals KK Red Star Belgrade . After the defeat in the cup final against the same opponent, in which Partizan missed the sixth double success in a row, there were indications that with the Red Star the series champion was again a serious competitor on a national level.

At the 2013 European Championship finals , Bogdanović was now also a member of a final squad of the men's national team, with which he was able to achieve group victory in the intermediate round, when the 21-year-old was able to score double-digit points in all intermediate round matches. In the quarterfinals, however, Bogdanović remained pale and only scored two points from free throws when the defending champions Spain , who had started weakly in the tournament, were clearly defeated by 30 points. In the placement games, the Serbian selection saved seventh place, which was the last European starting place at the World Cup finals the following year after World Cup hosts Spain won the bronze medal.

In the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 it was again just enough to qualify for the intermediate round of the 16 best teams. In this second group phase, Partizan scored four more wins in 14 games in the groups that were expanded to eight participants, including a home win against German representative FC Bayern Munich . After team captain Dragan Milosavljević missed the entire second half of the season after a knee injury, Bogdanović was able to distinguish himself and also received the “Rising Star Trophy” of the Euroleague for the best young player.

In the supranational ABA league 2013/14 Partizan had to give up the title it had won back from the previous year after losing to the new title winner KK Cibona Zagreb . In the national championship final series, it was enough to defend the title in a row against the recent cup winner and arch-rival Red Star thanks to a furious Bogdanović, who scored more than 30 points per game in the final series and was named Most Valuable Player. After missing the ABA League final, Partizan was no longer allowed to participate in the following ULEB Euroleague 2014/15, unlike Red Star .

Bogdanović was selected in the draft of the highest endowed professional league NBA by the Phoenix Suns in 27th position in the first round. Nevertheless, he agreed with the Turkish champions Fenerbahce Ulker in the summer of 2014 on a four-year contract in which he Serbian coaching legend Željko Obradović together with among others Jan Veselý , in the first Partizan season his teammate, and, initially, compatriot Nemanja Bjelica played .

At the first final tournament of the new national coach Aleksandar Đorđević , like club coach Obradović a former point guard from Partizan, Bogdanović reached the final with the Serbian selection at the 2014 World Cup in Spain, in which the superior defending champion United States , who had no game with less , reached the final than won 20 points, finally lost with 92: 129. After Serbia started the tournament with only two wins in five preliminary round games, Bogdanović was the top scorer in the round of 16 with 21 points in a 90-72 win over the undefeated Greeks in the preliminary round . In the quarter-final play-offs of the ULEB Euroleague 2014/15 , Fenerbahçe defeated defending champion Maccabi Tel Aviv in three games, but lost both games in the final four and still achieved the best result in this competition with fourth place. Bogdanović was awarded the Rising Star Trophy for the second time in a row . After Fenerbahçe had already lost the cup final against local rivals Anadolu Efes SK , they surprisingly lost the play-off semi-final series of the Turkish championship against the later first-time title winner Pınar Karşıyaka as defending champions .

At the 2015 European Championship finals , Serbia remained undefeated in the internal preliminary round in Berlin , but in the knockout rounds in Lille they finally lost the semi-finals against Lithuania and then against hosts France , so that Bogdanović was also in the men's area achieved the well-known fourth place in a European Championship finals.
