Luke Theodore Walton (born March 28, 1980 in San Diego , California ) is a retired American basketball player and now a coach.
Career as a player
Walton is the second youngest son of former NBA player Bill Walton . First, Walton studied genealogy for four years at the University of Arizona , where he also played for the Arizona Wildcats basketball team. In the 2003 NBA draft , he was selected in the second round of drafts by the Los Angeles Lakers . Walton played from 2003 to March 2012 in the US professional league NBA, initially with the Los Angeles Lakers as a small forward . For the first three years, Walton was a bench player and was rarely used. In his best season 2006/07 he was a starter in all 60 games and came up with 11.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 33.0 minutes per game. He won the NBA championship with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010.
From March 2012 he was in the squad of the Cleveland Cavaliers , where he had moved for Jason Kapono . In the summer of 2013, Walton announced that he would end his playing career. In his nine seasons as an active player, he averaged 4.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists with a playing time of 17.2 minutes per game.
Career as a coach
After retiring, he returned to Los Angeles and took on a position as player development coach and assistant coach with the Los Angeles D-Fenders , the D-League team of the Los Angeles Lakers. In July 2014, Walton became an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors . With these he won the 2015 NBA championship.
Early in the 2015-16 season , Walton was named interim head coach of the Golden State Warriors while head coach Steve Kerr was recovering from two back surgeries. Under his leadership, the Warriors won the first 24 games of the season (NBA record). He was named Trainer of the Month at the Western Conference for October / November 2015. When Kerr returned in late January 2016, the Warriors were the best team in the league with 39 wins and 4 losses.
Luke Walton is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers as Head Coach for the 2016/17 season . After the 2018/19 season , the Lakers parted ways with him. He has been Head Coach at the Sacramento Kings since April 2019 .
