The International 2012 was the second edition of the annual e-sports - Dota 2 - Championship tournament The International that the US game developer Valve is organized. It started on August 26, 2012 and ended on September 2, 2012. The tournament was held at the KeyArena in Seattle . As in the previous year, the prize money was US $ 1,600,000 , of which US $ 1,000,000 went to the winning team. It was won by the Chinese team Invictus Gaming after beating last year's winner Natus Vincere 3-1 in the final.
Several changes have been made compared to the previous year. Not all 16, but only 14 teams were invited. The other two teams were selected in two qualifying tournaments (West and East).
It was played in two groups of 8 teams each. Each team played a match of two games against each other in the group. In the end, the games won counted. The final round was played in a double knock-out system . The top 4 of each group started in the upper bracket, the worse 4 in the lower bracket. In contrast to the previous year, the entire upper bracket was played in the best-of-3 format.
The event was broadcast live on the internet in three languages ( English , Chinese and Russian ). The games were then put on the video platforms YouTube and Youku .
In November 2012, Valve published a documentary about the tournament. This contains interviews with the 16 teams that reached the qualification and accompanied them on their way to the final.
