The International 2011 was the first edition of the Dota 2 tournament The International , which was held at Gamescom . It began on 17 August 2011 and ended on 21 August 2011. The undistributed prize money amounted to 1.6 million US dollars , of which 1,000,000 dollars were awarded to the winning team. In its time it was the tournament with the highest prize money ever until it was outbid by the successor The International 2013 . It was won by the Ukrainian team Natus Vincere after defeating the Chinese team EHOME 3-1 in the final.
The main reason for hosting the tournament was to present Dota 2 as a continuation of the Warcraft 3 modification Defense of the Ancients . The tournament was an invitation tournament. The best 16 teams in the previous Defense of the Ancients were invited.
The group stage started on the first day. The teams were divided into 4 groups of 4 teams each, where each team played a game against every other team. The final round, which was played in a double knock-out system, took place on the following three days . The two best teams in the group started in the upper bracket. The two worse ones in the lower one. The last round of the upper bracket as well as the 5th and the last round of the lower bracket were held in the best of 3. The final was held in the best of 5, with the team from the upper bracket starting with a win. All other games were Best of 1
Note: Natus Vincere got a 1-0 lead before the start of the series because they came off the upper bracket. So they only needed two wins, while EHOME needed three.
