The Sinan Erdem Dome ( Turkish Sinan Erdem Spor Salonu ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Bakırköy district of the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul . In addition to the Turkish national basketball team , the two Istanbul clubs Anadolu Efes SK and Beşiktaş Milangaz are currently using the hall. Fenerbahçe Ülker , another basketball club, pulled now into the new custom Fenerbahçe Ülker Sports Arena at (approximately 13,800 seats). The maximum capacity for concerts is around 22,500 seats, for sports events there are around 16,500 seats. This makes the hall the largest in Turkey and the third largest in Europe.

Construction work and completion

Although construction of the hall began in 1993, it was not completed until the end of 2009. The arena was originally intended as a sports venue for the Olympic Games. Istanbul's application for the event was not crowned with success; therefore there were financing difficulties. This and the fact that there is already a large sports arena ( Abdi İpekçi Arena ) in Istanbul meant that the building was largely completed from the outside, but the interior was not beyond an early construction phase.

Events

The first major event in the hall was the 2010 men's basketball world championship , which the USA won with a final victory over hosts Turkey (81:64). From September 12th to 18th, 2011, the Sinan Erdem Dome hosted the World Wrestling Championships . At the end of October, the WTA Championships were played in the dome; The winner was the Czech Petra Kvitová , Wimbledon winner from 2011 , who defeated Wiktoryja Asaranka from Belarus 7: 5, 4: 6, 6: 3 in the final . The season finale in women's tennis was also held in the Istanbul Hall in 2012 and 2013. In addition, the Fina Short Course World Championships took place from December 12 to 16, 2012 . In 2012 the final four of the basketball EuroLeague 2011/12 was held in the hall. In 2017, the Sinan Erdem Dome was selected for the second time as the venue for the Final Four of the EuroLeague .

As a result of the closure of the Abdi İpekçi Arena , Anadolu Efes and Galatasaray will play their Euroleague games in the Sinan Erdem Dome from the 2017/18 season.
