The Abdi İpekçi Arena was a multi-purpose hall in the Zeytinburnu district in the European part of the Turkish city ​​of Istanbul . The arena was named after the journalist and editor-in-chief of the newspaper " Milliyet " Abdi İpekçi , who was shot in February 1979 by the pope assassin Mehmet Ali Ağca .

Construction work began in the late 1970s; but they have been interrupted in the meantime. The arena experienced its inauguration in 1986. The hall held a total of 12,500 spectators. The first division basketball team Galatasaray Medical Park (men, Türkiye Basketbol Ligi ) and (women, Türkiye Kadınlar Basketbol Ligi ), the basketball department of Galatasaray Istanbul , have played regularly in the sports arena since 2009 . The basketball teams of Anadolu Efes and Fenerbahçe Ülkerspor were also based in the hall until 2011 . Anadolu Efes then played his games in the Sinan Erdem Dome , but returned to the Abdi İpekçi Arena in 2015. Fenerbahçe moved from Sinan Erdem Dome to their new Ülker Sports Arena in 2012 . The hall was also used for other sports such as volleyball , weightlifting and wrestling . Concerts, conferences and other events are also organized. 1,500 parking spaces were available around the building.

The Final Four of the ULEB Euroleague 1991/92 was held in the hall. The final in the 1995 European Basketball Cup between Benetton Treviso and Taugrés Vitoria ended in the Abdi İpekçi Arena with a 94-86 victory for the Italians from Treviso.

The first All-Star Game of FIBA Europa FIBA Eurostars 1996 was played on December 30th of that year in front of 14,000 spectators in the Istanbul Arena. In the first All-Star Game since 1964, the East won against the West with 117: 114.

The hall was one of the venues for the 2001 European Basketball Championship and the 2010 World Basketball Championship . In 2004 the Eurovision Song Contest was held in the arena. In addition to the city of Izmir, Istanbul with the Abdi İpekçi Arena was the venue for the 2009 European men's volleyball championship . For the 2009 European Short Course Swimming Championships in the sports arena, two 25-meter pools were temporarily set up for the competitions.

The hall was closed after the 2016/17 season and demolition began in January 2018. A basketball training and performance center is to be built in their place. Anadolu Efes and Galatasaray have been playing their games in the Sinan Erdem Dome since the 2017/18 season . Galatasaray is also planning to move into a newly built arena in the coming years.
