Werner Gerich ( Chinese  威尔纳 · 格里希 , Pinyin Wēiěrnà Gélǐxī ; born August 25, 1919 in Mannheim ; † April 17, 2003 ibid), also called Ge Lixi , was a German engineer and technical consultant .

Life

Until his retirement, Gerich was a quality inspector at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center . At the age of 65, he registered with Bonn's Senior Expert Service (SES) and was sent as an expert to the Chinese city of Wuhan in 1984 , where he initially worked as a consultant for production and quality and later as general director at the state-owned diesel engine plant . This made Gerich China's first foreign factory manager since the 1949 revolution . In his two years as general manager, he redeveloped the run-down state factory through drastic reform measures and contributed to the technical improvement of diesel engines .

Honors

For his achievements as an SES expert, Gerich was awarded honorary citizenship of the city of Wuhan and an honorary professorship from Wuhan University . In 1987 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. The city of Wuhan had a bronze memorial bust erected in his honor in 2005, making him the third German after Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels to be honored with a memorial in China.

In 2008, he was placed on a list of 15 foreigners by the Beijing Bureau of Foreign Experts who have had the greatest influence on China's development since 1978. Together with Sabriye Tenberken , he was one of two Germans who received this honor.

In 2018 he was honored as one of the ten most important foreigners for China's development as part of the celebrations for 40 years of reforms and opening up.
