Andrew Melvin "Drew" Gooden (born September 24, 1981 in Oakland , California ) is a retired American basketball player , of Finnish descent, who was last active for the Washington Wizards . He is eight feet tall and played mainly on the power forward position .

Career

college

Drew Gooden played from the 1999/2000 season for the Kansas Jayhawks of the University of Kansas . There he formed a promising trio with Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich . While Drew Gooden was eliminated in the 2nd round of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournament in his freshman season , the Jayhawks managed to get into the Sweet Sixteen (round of 16) in 2000/2001 . Most successful was his senior season, in which the Jayhawks moved into the Final Four (semifinals) of the NCAA tournament. Andrew Gooden was named "NABC Player of the Year" and the Jayhawks' jersey number "0" was withdrawn in his honor.

NBA

In the 2002 NBA Draft , Drew Gooden was elected 4th by the Memphis Grizzlies . In February 2003, the Grizzlies transferred Gooden and Gordan Giriček to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Mike Miller and Ryan Humphrey . After his first year as a professional, Gooden was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . In July 2004 Andrew Gooden was sent to the Cleveland Cavaliers along with Steven Hunter and Anderson Varejão , who gave Tony Battie for it . With the Cavaliers, Gooden remained a constant until 2008 and achieved his greatest success there. In 2007 he became champion of the Eastern Conference and reached the NBA final with the Cavaliers. In February 2008, Drew Gooden was transferred to the Chicago Bulls as part of an eleven-player, three-team trade . A year later, in February 2009, Drew Gooden was transferred with Andrés Nocioni , Michael Ruffin and Cedric Simmons in exchange with Brad Miller and John Salmons and came to the Sacramento Kings . After playing only one game for the Kings, Gooden moved to the San Antonio Spurs in early March of that year for the remainder of the season .

In July 2009, he signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks.

On February 13, 2010 he was traded with Josh Howard , James Singleton and Quinton Ross for Caron Butler , Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson in the Washington Wizards . However, he did not play a game for the Wizards.

On February 17th he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of a trade between 3 teams . In return, Al Thornton moved to Washington.

On July 1, 2010, Gooden signed a five-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks . On April 9, 2011, he reached his first triple-double with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists. A year later, on March 14, 2012, he achieved the second triple double of his career. (15 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists) In July 2013 he was released from the Bucks via an amnesty clause.

On February 26, 2014, he signed a 10-day contract with the Washington Wizards. After a second 10-day contract and good performances, Gooden was signed for the rest of the season. Gooden stayed with the Wizards until 2016, after which his contract was not renewed. He didn't find an NBA team after that and ended his career. In 790 NBA games, Gooden scored 11.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Personal

Gooden's mother is from Finland . She met Gooden's father while he was playing professional basketball in Finland. Gooden himself emphasized that he wanted to represent the Finnish national team during the 2014 Basketball World Cup . However, he did not manage to get the Finnish passport in time.
