Anderson França Varejão (born September 28, 1982 in Santa Teresa , Espírito Santo ) is a Brazilian basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2004 to 2017 and whose strengths are defensive, including rebound .

Club career

Even at age 19 Varejao has been in the Brazilian first division for most valuable player voted the 2001/02 season, while being in January 2002 for FC Barcelona was changed, with whom he 2003 the Euro League final reached. After another year he moved to the NBA to the Cleveland Cavaliers. At the draft he was selected by the Orlando Magic , but was immediately transferred.

After two seasons with an average playing time of about 16 minutes, Varejão developed into an important factor in the final entry of the Cavaliers around LeBron James in 2006/07 . He then became a Restricted Free Agent and was initially unable to reach an agreement with the Cavaliers over salary negotiations. It wasn't until December 2007, after the Charlotte Bobcats submitted an offer, that he signed another contract with Cleveland. In the 2009/10 season he was elected to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team .

In the following years, Varejão was repeatedly thrown back by serious injuries. In January 2011 he tore a tendon in his foot, which meant the end of the season for him. The following season also ended early for him when he broke his right wrist in February 2012. In 2012/13 , Varejão led the NBA with 14.4 rebounds per game before injuring himself again on December 18. Initially only a knee bruise was diagnosed, but it turned out to be a tear in the quadriceps . In the course of the following convalescence , a blood clot was discovered in his lungs, so that Varejão was again canceled for the rest of the season. In December 2014, he tore his Achilles tendon in his left leg.

In February 2016, Varejao was transferred to the Portland Trail Blazers and released from them directly. He then joined the reigning champion Golden State Warriors .

National team career

With the Brazilian national team, Varejão took part in the 2002 World Championships , where he played with his ten-year-old brother Sandro Varejão in 2006 , 2010 and 2014 . At the 2006 World Cup, he inflicted a triple fracture of the cheekbone of the Greek Nikolaos Zisis with an elbow check . His greatest national team successes to date are the wins of the American Championships in 2005 and 2009. In 2012 Varejão took part in the Olympic Games for the first time.
