Christopher Wesson "Chris" Bosh (born March 24, 1984 in Dallas , Texas ) is a former American basketball player who was a total of 14 years in the NBA . From 2003 he first played for the Canadian Toronto Raptors , who drafted him until he joined the Miami Heat in 2010 and stayed with them until 2017.

During his career, Bosh became an NBA All-Star eleven times and won the NBA title with the Heat in 2012 and 2013 . With a height of 2.11 meters, he was used in the positions of the power forward and center .

Youth and school days

Chris Bosh was born on March 24, 1984 in Dallas, where he spent much of his youth in Hutchins, Texas . He had first contact with basketball through his father at the age of four and began to play this sport actively from the 4th grade. Since he was significantly taller than his fellow players of the same age in his youth, he had great advantages in rebounding from an early age . He was also interested in baseball , and was always part of the school team until high school.

Bosh describes his parents as the greatest influence, with Kevin Garnett being his great role model in basketball , which can also be seen in his style of play.

His talent soon became evident as he helped his Lincoln High School team to a perfect season with 40-0 wins. He played mostly outstanding and received several awards. During his high school days, he was named Mr. Basketball in Texas by the Texas coaches and also won the award for High School Player of the Year . Because of these achievements, he received offers from several colleges that offered him athletic scholarships . Due to the positive conversation with the local basketball coach Paul Hewitt, Chris Bosh decided to go to Georgia Tech .

There he confirmed his previous achievements and scored an average of 15.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 31 games . He also led his conference in throwing accuracy (56%). He is only the second player after Antawn Jamison to achieve this figure in his freshman college year .

His original plan was to graduate from college, but due to his accomplishments and superiority, he decided to drop out and enroll in the 2003 NBA Draft . He plans to catch up with the degree after his professional career.

NBA

Draft

He was selected in the Entry Draft 2003, which was considered one of the strongest of all time, in fourth place behind LeBron James , Darko Miličić and Carmelo Anthony by the only Canadian NBA team, the Toronto Raptors. He met his future teammates LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, who was selected in fifth place, in the draft .

Toronto Raptors

Soon after the draft, Toronto received several offers to swap Bosh for another player as the team sought an experienced scorer and many other teams saw the enormous potential of Bosh. Still, the raptors refused.

Due to the move from Antonio Davis to the Chicago Bulls , Bosh had his place in the team, but mostly had to play in the unfamiliar center position. There he had quite a problem as he was mostly physically inferior to his opponents despite his size and had to get used to the very physical game in the NBA. Nevertheless, he was particularly convincing with his great commitment and had the most rebounds and blocks of all rookies with an average of 11.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 33.5 minutes in his 75 games . He also set new team records for rebounds and blocks of a rookie in his 63 games in which he started. For these services he was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team .

The following season saw a major change in Bosh's career when the team's superstar, Vince Carter , moved to New Jersey in December and joined a new center in Alonzo Mourning . On the one hand, Bosh could now mainly play as a power forward and, on the other hand, his leadership skills were more in demand than before. In the weeks after the trade he played better than ever and was able to improve in every positive statistic (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). He was named Player of the Week for the first time in the Eastern Conference . Nevertheless, his team was again unable to qualify for play-offs by a considerable margin .

Its development continued in the 2005/06 season . He was named team captain and led his team on points, rebounds and throwing accuracy, and regularly scored double-doubles . For these achievements he was nominated for the first time for the All-Star Game , making it only the third player in the history of the Toronto Raptors to do so. However, Bosh was injured so badly in March that the season was over for him. His team then lost nine of the last ten games.

After that season, Chris Bosh signed a new three-year contract with a player option for a fourth year. This brought him 65 million US dollars.

The year 2006/07 would be the most successful since Bosh played in the NBA. He improved again and finally made the leap to superstar. He was chosen for the first time on the starting line-up of the All-Star Games and set a new personal record on February 7th with 41 points. For the first time there were MVP calls in the domestic Air Canada Center . On March 28, he became the player with the most double-doubles in Raptor history. At the end of the season Toronto landed in 3rd place in the east and had to play in the play-offs against New Jersey. Despite the better record and a convincing Chris Bosh, the Raptors lost the series 1: 4. At the end of the season Chris Bosh scored an average of 22.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game and was elected to the All-NBA Second Team .

After making it into the play-offs for the first time in years, hopes for further successes were strengthened, as Toronto was a young team with potential and strong front courts around Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani , with the strong distance shooter Jason Kapono got a hopeful addition. Nevertheless, it was only enough to achieve a balanced record with 41 wins and 41 losses, with Bosh missing 15 games injured. Nevertheless, he was able to improve his statistics further by setting career records for the three-point throw rate and free throw rate. In the play-offs there was a duel with the other young and up-and-coming Big Man in the league, Dwight Howard , who despite a convincing series from Bosh with 39 points and 15 rebounds in Game 4 with his team won the series 4-1 .

Although the team was strengthened with seasoned players like Hedo Türkoğlu and Jermaine O'Neal and promising talents like DeMar DeRozan could be signed, the team missed the play-offs in the following two years. Bosh continued to play at a consistently high level and, as in previous years, was nominated for the all-star game. While he had to cancel the game in 2009 due to an injury, he was able to play his fourth game in 2010 . In his last year in Toronto he was able to improve significantly again. He had the most throws per game in his career and was able to improve his hit rate to a career high of 51.8%. This results in another personal record of an average of 24 points per game, with 10.8 rebounds, the best rate of his career.

Miami Heat

After his contract expired, Bosh could freely switch to the 2010/11 season . There was a lot of speculation in advance, as a lot of superstars and experienced players became free agents in 2010 . On July 9th, Bosh and LeBron James announced that they would play for the Miami Heat team for the new season. The previous heat player Dwyane Wade, whose contract was expiring, announced his extension, so that the so-called Big Three came about . He left Toronto with several franchise records, including the one for most points and rebounds.

After an unexpectedly poor start of the new team in the season with nine victories in eight defeats, the team was able to increase Chris Bosh and closed the season in third place in the Eastern Conference starting, while in the meantime a 21: could achieve one series. Bosh was also part of the 2011 NBA All-Star Game , where he was only a replacement unlike his teammates James and Wade, who both started. On March 27, 2011, this trio managed to achieve at least 30 points and 10 rebounds each. This happened for the second time in NBA history, the last time 50 years ago when the trio Oscar Robertson , Wayne Embry and Jack Twyman of the Cincinnati Royals achieved the same minimum yield in February 1961. In the play-offs, Miami was able to surprisingly advance into the finals , with the champions of the Eastern Conference, the Chicago Bulls, and their MVP Derrick Rose being beaten. In the final, however, the now favored team from Miami lost to the Dallas Mavericks in 4-2 games.

During the 2011/12 season, Bosh played very inconsistently, which earned him a lot of criticism. Sometimes the three stars of the team were only called Two and a Half Men due to Bosh's mixed performance, alluding to the eponymous program . Only in the play-offs did Chris Bosh regularly perform well. In the third game of the Finals he scored the decisive points for the 88:86 away win of the Heat at the Oklahoma City Thunder . Miami won the championship in 2012.

However, while his litter rates remained relatively constant, his resulting stats fell. He achieved an average of only 18.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, but this was mainly due to the fact that he was no longer the sole focus of the offensive, as was the case in Toronto, and he had the radius of action with them in the game even more dominant Dwyane Wade and LeBron James have to share. Nevertheless, it was enough to win the 2013 championship over the San Antonio Spurs . In 2014 the Heat reached the final. This time, however, the Spurs managed to retaliate. At the end of the season, Bosh, Wade and James' contracts with the Heat expired. While Bosh and Wade extended their contracts, James moved back to the Cavaliers. As a result, the Heat lost their favorite role. Bosh, however, was given a bigger role in attack by the change from James.

On February 21, 2015, the Miami Heat announced that Chris Bosh had been diagnosed with a blood clot in his lungs. Bosh went to hospital for medical treatment on February 19. According to heat coach Erik Spoelstra , there was no mortal danger. In a press conference on March 9, 2015, the Miami Heat announced that they are expecting Chris Bosh back for the 2015/16 season. Bosh started strength training in April and returned fully to training by September. Bosh made his comeback for the new season. After 53 games, he was diagnosed with a new blood clot in his leg and Bosh again suspended the rest of the season and the play-offs. Bosh sat the following season 2016-17 due to the blood clotting problems completely. The NBA ruled that Bosh's blood disease was a career-related illness, so the Heat fired him in July 2017. In February 2019, Bosh announced the end of his career. His jersey number 1 is no longer awarded by the Heat in his honor.

After his NBA career began and it became apparent that Bosh was maturing into one of the best players in his position, he soon moved into the focus of the US national team . Bosh was part of the team that won bronze at the 2006 World Basketball Championship . They defeated the reigning Olympic champion Argentina in the game for third place . He achieved the sixth best hit rate out of the field during the tournament.

He was also nominated for the team that took part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bosh was mostly used as a backup of the Dwight Howard center and won the gold medal undefeated with his team. He achieved an average of 9.1 points in the tournament and was the best rebounder in the team with 6.1 rebounds.
