Christopher Zane "Chris" Kaman (born April 28, 1982 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) is a former German- American basketball player who was active from 2003 to 2016 in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The center averaged 11.2 points and 7.6 rebounds in 26.7 minutes per game in a total of 735 league games . In the 2009/10 season he was elected to the NBA All-Star Team . As a player in the German national team , he took part in the 2011 European Championship .

NBA career

Los Angeles Clippers (2003-2011)

Kaman played college basketball at Central Michigan University . He was selected in 6th place in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers . In his first NBA season 2003/04 he was one of the pillars of his team. He started in 61 of the 82 games he played and scored 6.1 points and 5.6 rebounds on average. Since he was the rookie with the second most blocks, the third best hit rate and the fourth most rebounds, he was elected to the NBA Rookie All-Star Team as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend . In the following season he was only able to take part in 63 games of his team due to injury, but still increased to 9.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

In the 2005/06 NBA season , the Clippers were able to achieve more wins than losses for the first time in 14 seasons and made it back to the NBA playoffs for the first time in nine years, not least because of the 11.9 points and 9th , 6 rebounds per game by Kaman. His 9.6 rebounds per game earned him ninth place in this category. In the first playoff game of his career, Kaman was able to contribute 15 points and 13 rebounds to his team's victory against the Denver Nuggets , against which the Clippers were ultimately able to prevail after five games. In the second round, the Clippers had to admit defeat to the Phoenix Suns after seven games.

In the following season, Kaman's personal stats dropped a bit and the Clippers narrowly missed the playoffs. When the Clippers had to do without Elton Brand and Shaun Livingston due to injuries in the following season 2007/08 , the expectations of the Clippers were low this year. Kaman surprised with a better performance on the field and presented himself as one of the best centers in the league: 15.7 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game spoke for themselves. However, he had to sit out 30 games due to injury. In the 2008/09 NBA season he was also due to injuries only in 31 games on the field.

It wasn't until the 2009/10 NBA season that Kaman seemed to have overcome his injuries and he was on the field in 78 out of 82 possible games. He was able to raise his points average to 18.5 and achieved his career best of 29 points this season. His consistently good performance also made him an NBA All-Star for the first time in 2010. In the 139: 141 defeat of the selection of the West against that of the East, he reached 4 points and 3 rebounds in 11 minutes. The 2010-2011 NBA season started very badly for the Clippers. They lost 15 of their first 17 games and Kaman was injured early in the season.

New Orleans Hornets (2011-2012)

Before the start of the 2011/12 season , Kaman was transferred from the Clippers to the New Orleans Hornets . He was part of a barter deal that brought the Clippers Chris Paul to Los Angeles. Kaman's contract expired after the 2011/12 season and was not renewed. During the season, the Hornets tried to transfer Kaman again to save salary. This did not succeed and Kaman stayed in the Hornets squad until the end of the season.

Dallas Mavericks (2012-2013)

After his contract in New Orleans expired, Kaman was looking for a new club and received many offers from across the NBA. He eventually signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks . There he should help to compensate for the many departures in summer 2012 and to keep the Mavericks in the playoffs area. There he met Dirk Nowitzki , with whom he already played for the German national basketball team . However, the Mavs missed the 2013 playoffs and Kaman did not get a new contract in Dallas due to fluctuating performance.

Los Angeles Lakers (2013-2014)

For the following season 2013/2014 Kaman finally moved to Los Angeles to the Los Angeles Lakers . There he received a contract until the summer of 2014. Even with the Lakers, Kaman was unable to build on previous performances and was temporarily not used at all. In just 39 games, Kaman averaged 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in the Lakers' jersey.

Portland Trail Blazers (2014-2016)

After the sobering season in Los Angeles, Kaman received no new contract from the Lakers. He then moved to Portland and signed a two-year contract with the Portland Trail Blazers there with a salary of 10 million US dollars. Here, in his first year, for the first time in years, he scored less than 10 points on average (8.6 points per game) and got 6.5 rebounds. In the 2015/16 season Kaman completed only 16 season games for the Blazers in which he scored 2.8 points and 1.5 rebounds, making these his worst career values. His contract with the Blazers had expired and he did not receive a new contract in the NBA at the start of the season.

German national team

Born in the United States, Kaman received his German passport on July 2, 2008 after declaring that he wanted to play for the German national basketball team . This was only possible because of his German great-grandparents on his father's side. Kaman neither speaks German nor has he lived in Germany for a long time. He wanted to make his Olympic dream come true and attend the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

On July 15, Kaman played his first game for the German national team at the pre-Olympic tournament in Athens. In his first game for the German national team against Cape Verde, the 2.13 meter center marked 10 points and 10 rebounds. In his second game for Germany, against New Zealand, he convinced with 20 points. In its 25 internationals so far, the center achieved an average of 13.7 points per game.

In 2011, Kaman took part in the 2011 European Championships . At the BEKO Supercup 2011, ahead of the European Championship, Kaman made his comeback for Germany.
