Norman WC Powell (born May 25, 1993 in San Diego , California ) is an American basketball player . He is under contract with the Toronto Raptors in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
college
Born in San Diego , California , Norman Powell was introduced to the sport of basketball by his uncle and played at Lincoln High School, where he graduated as one of the most talented shooting guards of his class nationwide . In 2011 he enrolled at UCLA , where he was already a regular at the Bruins in his freshman season.
In the following season he was included in the starting five for the first time and scored an average of 6.1 points per game in an average of 22.1 minutes on the field. During the season he considered a move to San Diego State because of differences with head coach Ben Howland . Powell's transfer plans flew with the dismissal of Howard and under the new coach Steve Alford , he improved his offensive game significantly in his junior year. With 11.4 points per game, he was the third best scorer on the UCLA team.
After his third year, he was already considering moving to the National Basketball Association , but thought his chances of being drafted were too slim and stayed in college for the final, fourth year.
After his teammates Jordan Adams , Kyle Anderson and Zach LaVine all signed up for the draft and the twins David Travis Wear graduated from college, Powell rose to senior team leader. He was this season with 16.4 points per game to the top scorer of the Bruins and the sixth best in the entire conference and received numerous nominations for teams of the year. He graduated from university with a degree in history at the end of the season.
NBA
On June 25, 2015, Powell was selected 46th in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks , who shipped his draft rights along with a future pick in exchange with Greivis Vásquez to the Toronto Raptors . A month later he signed a contract with the Raptors and took part with the team in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, where he was called up as the only rookie in the All-NBA Summer League First Team.
Due to injury-related failures of the squad players Terrence Ross and DeMarre Carroll , Powell received early service times in the NBA in the 2015/16 season , but was also sent several times to the " farm team " Raptors 905 in the G-League . Powell was allowed to start for the first time in the NBA on February 2, 2016 in the 104: 97 win against the Phoenix Suns , again benefiting from injuries to his teammates Carroll and James Johnson , but not winning a single point in the game.
He was regularly used as a starter in the next period and marked his season best with 30 points in the last game of the regular season in the 103:96 win against the Brooklyn Nets . After outstanding performance in April 2016 and 15.3 points per game, he was named Rookie of the Month in the Eastern Conference . In the playoffs, his playing time was significantly less than in the last games of the regular season and he reached the Conference Finals with Toronto, where they were eliminated against the later champions of the Cleveland Cavaliers .
At the beginning of the next 2016/17 season he started more often, but mostly impressed with his scoring coming from the bench. He played 76 games in the regular season, in which he came to 8.4 points per game with an average of 18 minutes of use. In the fifth game of the first playoff round against the Milwaukee Bucks, he achieved a personal best playoff score of 25 points and contributed significantly to the clear 118: 93 victory of the Raptors. The last stop was for Toronto in the second round against the Cavaliers.
On October 8, 2017, Powell prematurely signed a new four-year contract with the Raptors, which will bring him a total of 42 million US dollars from the 2018/19 season . In the 2017/18 season he could not improve and ended the regular season with only 5.5 points per game, which he was able to achieve in an average of 15.2 minutes. In the playoffs, he saw little relevant time and failed with the team for the third time in a row at the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In response to this defeat, Toronto parted ways with both head coach Dwane Casey and franchise player DeMar DeRozan , who was sent to the San Antonio Spurs in a trade for superstar Kawhi Leonard . The previous assistant coach Nick Nurse took over as the new head coach , under whom Powell did not get beyond a role as a bank player at the beginning of the 2018/19 season. Between November and December 2019, he also missed 21 games due to a shoulder injury. On January 6, 2019, he scored a season high of 23 points in the 121: 105 win against the Indiana Pacers . He finished the regular season with the best scores in various statistics, including a career record of 8.6 points per game, which he was able to achieve in an average of 18.8 minutes. In the playoffs he was also part of the rotation and advanced with the team in the final against the Golden State Warriors . This one defeated in six games and thus won the first championship in franchise history.
In the following 2019/20 season , Powell improved his points yield significantly and took turns with Fred VanVleet in the starting five. On March 5, 2020, he scored 37 points in the 121: 113 win over the Golden State Warriors , a career best in this category.
