Fredderick "Fred" Edmund VanVleet (born February 25, 1994 in Rockford , Illinois ) is an American basketball player . He has been playing the season 2016/17 for the Toronto Raptors in the NBA at the position of the point guards .

High school and college

Fred VanVleet's father was shot dead in a drug deal in 1999 when Fred was five years old. His stepfather wanted to avoid ending up like his father and shielded him from bad influences by not allowing him to enter certain areas of the city. He focused Fred on the sport of basketball and trained him and his three brothers in his childhood. VanVleet played successfully in his youth for Auburn High School in his hometown of Rockford , Illinois, and then decided to play for Wichita State University . He played for the Shockers every four years. He already celebrated his breakthrough in his sophomore year for Wichita and averaged 11.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.9 steals per game. With his team he remained victorious in all 31 games this season. He received the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year award and was elected to the All-MVC team. These numbers remained more or less constant in the following two years. In his senior year, he was voted MVC Player of the Year for the second time. He also joined the All-Conference team for the third time in a row. After four years in college, he signed up for the 2016 NBA draft .

NBA

Despite his outstanding performance for Wichita State, he was not selected by any team on draft day after he had previously turned down offers from two NBA clubs to play for their farm teams in the NBA Development League . VanVleet joined the Toronto Raptors ' squad to play for them in the NBA Summer League . On July 18, 2016, he signed a multi-year contract with the Raptors. In the training camp he fought for a place in the Canadians' squad and on October 22nd he was called to the final squad. He made his NBA debut on November 9, 2016 in the 112:10 away win against the Oklahoma City Thunder , in which he was on the field for 26 seconds. In the 19th game of the season against the Los Angeles Lakers on December 2, he scored his first two points. After the turn of the year he came to work more and more frequently. On February 3, 2017, he scored a personal best of 15 points in the game against Orlando Magic . Also in the playoffs he came to short appearances as a result. He was also assigned several times in his rookie season to the farm team Raptors 905 and won the championship in the D-League with them.

As a sophomore he was appointed second point guard of the Raptors after the departure of Cory Joseph . On November 24, 2017, he scored a new career high of 16 points in the game against the Indiana Pacers . He achieved another record four days later against the Charlotte Hornets with nine assists. On January 28, 2018, he scored 25 points in the 123: 111 win over the Lakers. He finished the 2017/18 season with an average of 8.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists in an average of 20 minutes per game. In the playoffs, the Raptors failed in the Eastern Conference semi-finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers . With his strong performance, characterized by efficiency, he was nominated for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award , which Lou Williams ultimately won.

On July 6, 2018, Fred VanVleet signed a new contract with the Raptors. On December 11, 2018, he recorded a new personal best in assists with 14 assists against the Los Angeles Clippers . On February 7, he scored 30 points against the Atlanta Hawks for the first time in his career. In mid-February he was out for eleven games due to a ligament injury. He finished the main round with eleven points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists in an average of 27.5 minutes per game. With Toronto he reached the playoffs as runner-up in the Eastern Conference this 2018/19 season . In the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Conference against Orlando Magic , he was a weak point of the Raptors offense due to his poor throw rate. However, that changed in the semifinals against the Milwaukee Bucks . With 21 points and seven converted three-point throws, he made a significant contribution to the victory in game five of the final, with the Raptors taking the lead in the series 3-2. In the sixth game you could defeat the Bucks a fourth time and moved into the NBA Finals for the first time since the foundation. There he played a major role on the defensive against the generic point guard Stephen Curry and bagged the first championship in franchise history with 22 points in the sixth game in a 114: 110 win .
