Dewan Hernandez (birth name: Dewan Huell ) (born December 9, 1996 in Miami ) is an American basketball player .

career

Under his maiden name Dewan Huell, he played basketball at Miami Norland Senior High School and received scholarship offers from the University of Kansas , University of North Carolina , Florida State University , University of Florida , University of Louisville and the University of Miami . He decided to move to the latter university and stayed in his hometown. Between 2016 and 2018 he was used in 64 games and averaged 8.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per encounter. In October 2018 he officially changed his surname from Huell to Hernandez in honor of his mother Christina Hernandez.

Hernandez's name appeared on filings of unauthorized payments to college players as part of a US judicial investigation. The NCAA and the university initially did not grant him a game permit for the 2018/19 season due to the ongoing investigations. When the NCAA found it proven that Hernandez had violated college league regulations by agreeing to receive monthly payments from a player's agent, he was banned for the remainder of the 2018/19 season and 40 percent of the following season. The sporting leadership of the University of Miami called the NCAA judgment "not only disappointing, but unfair". According to an ESPN report, there was no evidence that payments to Hernandez had actually been made. After the verdict was published, Hernandez announced at the end of January 2019 that he would end his university career and switch to the professional camp.

In the NBA draft proceedings in June 2019, the reigning champions Toronto Raptors secured the rights to Hernandez and provided Hernandez with a multi-year contract the following month without disclosing details of the working paper.
