Shawn Dwayne Marion (born May 7, 1978 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 1999 to 2015 , most recently with the Cleveland Cavaliers . Marion was used at a height of 2.01 meters in the positions small forward and power forward .
Career
Marion was selected 9th in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns . In his first year he attracted attention with his strong athleticism and was elected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team with 10.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists . In his sophomore year he increased his stats to 17.3 points and 10.7 rebounds. Marion matured into one of the best and most spectacular forwards in the league during his time in Phoenix, and he was also considered to be very defensive. Because of this way of playing, he was nicknamed "The Matrix". During this time, he was called up to the NBA All-Star Game four times (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007), complaining several times about a lack of recognition. According to him, his two teammates Steve Nash and Amar'e Stoudemire were preferred. He never substantiated these allegations. His best year was the 2005-06 season in which Marion put up 21.8 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.7 blocks. With the Suns he advanced to the Western Conference finals in the same year.
On February 6, 2008, an exchange deal between the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat was completed. Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks were traded for Shaquille O'Neal . He played for the Heat for a year but failed to live up to expectations.
In February 2009 Shawn Marion moved together with Marcus Banks in exchange for Jermaine O'Neal , Jamario Moon and a draft pick to the Toronto Raptors . For the Raptors he played until the end of the season.
On July 9, 2009, he signed a 5-year contract and was then immediately transferred to the Dallas Mavericks to Dirk Nowitzki . He played for five years in Dallas, where he distinguished himself as a good rebounder and defender. He reached the playoffs every time with the Mavericks and during this time he achieved 11.6 points and 7.0 rebounds on average. Marion won the 2011 NBA championship with the Mavericks. With the exception of the 2010-11 season, Marion was a regular starter for the Mavericks.
In August 2014, Marion announced his move to the Cleveland Cavaliers , where he played alongside LeBron James . On December 26, 2014, Marion achieved his 10,000 career rebound. With the Cavaliers, Marion reached the NBA final, but there they lost to the Golden State Warriors . Marion then announced his resignation.
In 16 NBA years Marion had 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He reached the playoffs 11 times with his teams. At the end of his career, Marion was among the top 50 players of all time in the blocks, steals, rebounds and minutes played.
National team
Marion took part in the 2002 World Cup with the US basketball team and won the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He was also nominated for the 2006 World Cup , but injured his ankle just before it started.
