Nikola Jokić (born February 19, 1995 in Sombor , BR Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian basketball player who has been under contract with the Denver Nuggets in the North American professional league NBA since 2015 .

Career

In 2012 Jokić signed a contract with KK Mega Vizura , a club in the Adriatic League and the Serbian League. In the 2013/14 season he had his breakthrough as a starter and teams from the NBA also became aware of Jokić. He was selected in the 2014 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets in 41st place, but remained with Mega Vizura for another year. He developed into one of the best players in the Adriatic League and was voted Adriatic MVP with 15.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in 24 games .

NBA

In the summer of 2015, Jokić moved to the NBA, where he signed a three-year contract with the Nuggets. Jokic established himself as a starter during the season, scoring 10.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game in his first year. In the subsequent election for Rookie of the Year , he came third. He was also appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team . In his second NBA year, Jokic increased strongly. He scored 16.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game and at the end of the season finished second behind Giannis Antetokounmpo in the choice of the most improved player of the season . In his third NBA season, he became one of the best centers in the NBA. In his third season he was able to screw his values up again and came to 18.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. On November 7, 2017, he scored 41 points against the Brooklyn Nets, his career best to date. Despite its strong values, the Denver Nuggets could not qualify for the playoffs again and narrowly lost the last and decisive game against the Minnesota Timberwolves . In the summer of 2018, the Denver Nuggets and Jokić signed a new five-year deal allegedly worth $ 146.5 million. With this new contract, Jokić became one of the highest earning players in the NBA. In 2019 Jokić was appointed to the NBA All Star Game for the first time.

National team

Jokić took part with the Serbian U19 selection at the U19 World Cup in 2013 in the Czech Republic and won the silver medal. In 2016 he was appointed to the Serbian men's national team to qualify for the Olympic Games. After the successful qualification, he also belonged to the Serbian team at the Olympic basketball tournament in Rio de Janeiro, which received the silver medal after a final defeat against the team of the United States.

Style of play

The Serbian way of playing is characterized by versatility. With the height and mass of a classic center , Jokić has ball handling that is similar to the skills of a playmaker. Jokić called himself a builder in the body of a center. He is a good passer, has a safe throw from distance, high game intelligence and mediocre athleticism at the same time.
