In his senior year he scored 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds per encounter and led his team with a record of 29 wins in no single defeat to win the championship in competition class 3A in Washington state. He was appointed to the US U18 national team, won the US U18 Championship in 2016 and stood out at the “Nike Hoop Summit” (this game is a US team versus a world team) in February 2017 with 19 points.

Porter initially accepted the University of Washington team but changed his mind and joined the University of Missouri after his father moved from Washington to Missouri as an assistant coach. In his first and only season at the University of Missouri, Porter came due to back problems that made surgery necessary, only in three games and posted an average of 10.0 with 6.7 rebounds per game.

In late March 2018, Porter announced that he would be leaving university and participating in the NBA 's draft process . There he was selected in 14th place by the Denver Nuggets  .

In August 2018, he underwent a second back operation and was therefore not used during the 2018/19 season . In July 2019, Porter injured himself again, this time his left knee joint was affected.
