Earl Joseph Smith III (born September 9, 1985 in Freehold Borough , New Jersey ), known as JR Smith , is an American basketball player who was active for most of his professional career in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is currently under contract with the Los Angeles Lakers .
Professional career
New Orleans Hornets (2004-2006)
Without going to college, Smith signed up for the NBA draft straight out of high school . In the 2004 draft , he was selected 18th by the New Orleans Hornets . In his debut season in the NBA, he averaged 10.3 points, 2 rebounds and 1.9 assists , making him one of the hopes in New Orleans, who were the third worst team in the league in the 2004/05 season . His best game to date he had against the Memphis Grizzlies on March 26, 2005, in which he contributed 33 points to the victory of his team.
In his second season, Smith could not build on the good performance of the previous year. He had developed too little; his defensive weakness was criticized by coach Byron Scott . In the middle of the season he found himself more on the bench than on the field. As a consequence, he was transferred to the Chicago Bulls in the 2006 break together with PJ Brown in exchange for center Tyson Chandler .
Denver Nuggets (2006-2011)
The Bulls in turn sent the Shooting Guard to the Denver Nuggets a little later without Smith playing a game for the team.
As a player in the Nuggets, Smith took part in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest during the NBA Allstar Weekend 2009 , where he replaced the injured Rudy Gay , but was eliminated in the first round. On April 13 of the same year he reached new career highs in the home game against the Sacramento Kings with 45 points and eleven three-point throws .
Zhejiang Golden Bulls (2011-2012)
After his contract expired in the summer of 2011, Smith moved to the Zhejiang Golden Bulls in China due to the NBA lockout . On February 17, 2012, his China adventure was over and the New York Knicks signed him for a year.
New York Knicks (2012-2015)
In the course of the 2012/13 season, Smith established himself as a top performer coming from the bank and played a major role in the successful performance of the Knicks. He was honored with the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award for his achievements . He then extended his contract with the Knicks for three more years.
In January 2015, Smith was transferred from the Knicks to the Cleveland Cavaliers . The Knicks were far outside the playoff places at this point and were able to save valuable wages with this trade.
Cleveland Cavaliers (2015-2019)
In game two of the 2016 first playoff round against the Detroit Pistons , Smith scored 21 points from 3-point throws alone. Smith set a playoff record: Robert Horry (1997 with the Los Angeles Lakers ) and Danny Green (2014 for the San Antonio Spurs ) also scored 21 points from the triple line.
In 2018, Smith and LeBron James' Cavaliers team made it into the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors for the fourth time in a row . At the intermediate result of 107: 107 in the first game, George Hill missed a decisive free throw, Smith got the rebound and ran back to the center line with 4.7 seconds remaining, mistakenly thinking the Cavaliers were in the lead. The Cavaliers lost the game in overtime with 114: 124 and had to admit defeat to the Warriors in the following three games.
Los Angeles Lakers (since 2020)
On July 1, 2020, the Los Angeles Lakers announced that they had signed Smith as a substitute.
