NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award

The NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award is an award from the NBA that has been presented to the league's most valuable substitute player ( Sixth Man ) for his team since the 1982/83 NBA season .

Only players who are on the bench more often than in the starting line-up at the start of the season are awarded.

Election mode

The winner is chosen by sports journalists and broadcasters from the United States and Canada. Each eligible voter states his or her decision for first, second and third place. Each vote is worth five points for first place; each vote for second place is worth three points; and every third place is worth one point. The player with the highest score, regardless of the number of first places, will receive the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award .

The first player to receive this award was Bobby Jones of the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1982/83 season. The current awardee is Lou Williams of the Los Angeles Clippers . The record winner is Jamal Crawford with three awards (as of the end of the 2017/18 season).

2008-09 winner Jason Terry played the Dallas Mavericks the most minutes per game of a Sixth Man of the Year game over a season, averaging 33.7 minutes .

Jamal Crawford and Lou Williams are the only two three-time winners of the award. Kevin McHale, Ricky Pierce and Detlef Schrempf have each received the award twice.

Kevin McHale, Bill Walton and Bobby Jones are the only members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to have won the award.

Bill Walton and James Harden are the only award winners who have also received the MVP award in their careers.

Detlef Schrempf was the first non-American to receive the award in the 1990/91 season. Besides Schrempf, Toni Kukoč, Ben Gordon, Leandro Barbosa and Manu Ginóbili are the only award winners who were not born in the United States. Of the five foreign-born winners, only three had not previously played at an American college: Kukoč, Barbosa and Ginóbili.
