UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning
The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, abbreviated UIL ) has the task of promoting adult education , lifelong learning , informal education and literacy in all regions of the world.
history
The UIL was founded in Hamburg on May 27, 1952 as a foundation under the name UNESCO Institute for Education (UNESCO Institute for Education, abbreviated UIP ), after the first director of the institute, Walther Merck , started work on March 1, 1952 would have. The tasks of the UIP / UIL were defined in the statutes of 1952 as follows: "To set up a central office in Germany for connections between educators from different countries ... without prejudice due to national, racial or cultural differences ...". The institute was founded to promote international understanding through education. Soon the institute specialized in adult and non-formal education, with a focus on developing countries.
Lifelong learning
With the 1972 report of the UNESCO Education Commission under Edgar Faure , “Learning To Be”, lifelong learning became the main focus of the institute's work. In the 1980s, the institute gained an international reputation for its work in the field of post-literacy .

renaming
On July 1, 2006, the legal form of the institute changed. The German foundation of the UNESCO Institute for Education was brought into line with the international legal status of the other UNESCO institutes and converted into an international institute. The name change to UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) should take into account the changed thematic focus.
goals and tasks
The aim of the institute is to provide education - formal, non-formal and informal - to all people in the world. In addition to the analysis and further development of concepts, methods, political approaches and socio-cultural contexts of education, this includes participating in the development of national and local capacities in the member countries of UNESCO, as well as promoting networks and partnerships. Another important part of the work of the UIL is the initiation and coordination of cooperative research projects.
