founding

The library was established in 1952 when the institute was founded. From the beginning, its purpose was to support the institute's goals and research activities.

Change of collecting areas

The collection areas of the library for lifelong learning have changed over the years with the change in the institute's research topics.

In the 1950s, through the appeal of Maria Montessori , early childhood support became one of the first collection areas of the Hamburg UNESCO Library. This was followed by topics of adult education and school education in order to be able to influence the Germans and especially the German youth and thus make it easier for them to live together in an international context.

In the 1960s, the library turned to the collection focus of international educational research in developing countries , which over the years gained more and more importance.

In the 1970s, the UNESCO Institute was commissioned to promote lifelong learning, which is still an important focus of the library's holdings today.

In the 1980s, the subject area of education was expanded to include literacy. At the same time, the collection of the special collection area of international learning materials from the areas of literacy and extracurricular education began, which today has a volume of over 7200 materials in over 160 languages from around 120 countries.

In the 1990s, topics such as lifelong learning and formal and non-formal education became another important area for the library. The documents e.g. B. on the rights of women to education have been included in the library collection as a topical issue.
