Carlos Austin Boozer Jr. (born November 20, 1981 in Aschaffenburg ) is a former American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2002 to 2015 , including the Utah Jazz and the Chicago Bulls . At a height of 2.06 meters, he mostly played the position of the power forward .

Boozer was known as a good scorer and rebounder and was twice NBA All-Star in his career , as well as a member of the All-NBA Third Team (2008). He also won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games with the USA national team .

Most recently Boozer played in the Chinese CBA for the Guangdong Southern Tigers .

Career

Boozer, the son of a soldier stationed in Germany, grew up in Juneau , Alaska , where he was considered an extraordinarily talented high school basketball player. In 1998/99 he was named McDonald's All-American . After winning the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship with Duke University under coach Mike Krzyzewski , he left the Blue Devils after his junior year to enroll for the NBA draft .

NBA

Boozer was selected 35th by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2002 NBA Draft . In 2003 he was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team for his first year as a professional . In his second year in the NBA, he became a teammate of LeBron James . Boozer established himself as a starter with the Cavaliers and came in his second year to 15.5 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

In 2004 he switched to Utah Jazz . This move led to a publicly held controversy as Boozer had allegedly given the Cavaliers an oral pledge for another year (on unchanged financial terms). In the first two years Boozer missed numerous games due to injuries. He only started in the 2006/07 season . He formed with Deron Williams one of the best one-two-punch duos in the league and put on 20.9 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. In 2007 Boozer was also called up for the first time to participate in the All-Star Game , in which he was unable to participate due to an injury. He reached the final series of the Western Conference in the following playoffs with Utah . In 2008 Boozer was elected to the All-NBA Third Team and took part actively in the All-Star Game for the first time. He scored 21.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists. In the 2008/09 season he fell out for more than 3 months due to a tendon injury in his left knee and was replaced by Paul Millsap during this time . He nonetheless played a productive season for the Jazz, scoring 19.7 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

After the 2009/10 season he became a free agent and was sent to the Chicago Bulls by sign-and-trade , where he signed a five-year contract for just under $ 65 million. He played for the Bulls for four years. However, his statistics worsened from year to year. In the 2013/14 season, he only achieved 13.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. In the summer of 2014, the Bulls announced that they would release Boozer with the so-called "amnesty clause".

The Los Angeles Lakers were able to tie the power forward to themselves. Boozer played mainly as a substitute for the unsuccessful Lakers and recorded 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in 71 games, his weakest values since his rookie season. The playoffs were clearly missed and Boozer's contract with the Lakers was not extended.

After taking a year off, Boozer accepted an offer from China in July 2016 and moved to the Chinese Basketball Association for the Guangdong Southern Tigers , where he played until 2017. In December 2017, Boozer announced his retirement from professional sports.

National team

Boozer was part of the US selection that won the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics . Four years later he became an Olympic champion with the national team.
