Marcus Lehmann

Marcus Lehmann , also Markus Lehmann , Meïr Lehmann , (born December 29, 1831 in Verden ; died April 14, 1890 in Mainz ) was a German Orthodox rabbi and publicist.

Marcus Lehmann was the son of the rabbinical scholar Lemmel b. Aron Welsberg from Zeckendorf in Upper Franconia . From 1844 he attended the Domgymnasium in Verden and received Talmud lessons from his father. In 1848 he went to Halberstadt to study the Talmud with Gerson Josaphat and Esriel Hildesheimer . In autumn 1850 he returned to Verden and finished high school.

In 1851 Lehmann went to study at the University of Prague and in October 1852 at the University of Berlin . In August 1852 he received his doctorate from the University of Halle .

From 1854 until his death he was the rabbi of the orthodox "Israelite Religious Society" in Mainz in their synagogue .

Lehmann founded the magazine Der Israelit in Mainz in 1860 and published it until his death. He also wrote novels and short stories from Jewish history.

His youngest son, the writer Jon Lehmann (1865–1913), published his biography in 1910.
