Christopher Bartle (usually shortened to Chris Bartle ; born February 19, 1952 in Harrogate , North Yorkshire , United Kingdom ) is a well-known English dressage and eventing rider and trainer . He was a successful Olympic participant several times and has been national coach of the German eventing team together with Hans Melzer since 2001 . Today he heads the Yorkshire Riding Center in Harrogate. Chris is the younger brother of Jane Bartle-Wilson , who was also an Olympian in Los Angeles in 1984.

education

Chris Bartle attended Ampleforth College and the University of Bristol , where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics with Honors. After graduating, he tried his hand at first as an amateur jockey. However, since he had some problems keeping his weight low at his height of 1.80 m, he switched to eventing. He was trained by the two-time gold medalist in Helsinki in 1952, Hans von Blixen-Finecke junior .

dressage

In 1976 he had to withdraw his horse Wily Trout from the eventing competition because it was injured during training. But a year later he took Wily Trout at the Dressage World Cup part in singles. From 1981 to 1987 Chris Bartle was a member of the British dressage team with Wily Trout . At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the British team finished eighth, and Chris Bartle was sixth in the dressage singles, the best-placed Brit.

In 1986 Bartle again achieved second place with Wily Trout at the first dressage world cup final in 's-Hertogenbosch . In the same year he was awarded the Medal of Honor from the British Equestrian Association.

versatility

Finally, Christopher Bartle turned back to eventing and won team gold at the 1997 European Championships . A year later he won the renowned Badminton Horse Trial with his horse Word Perfect II . With Word Perfect II he was also a reserve at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

British national team

After his dressage successes, Christopher Bartle became the trainer of the British eventing team and took part with him at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000. He has received the British Horse Society's Trainers Award and in 2001 became an honorary member of the British Horse Society.

Bartle has been training the British eventing team again since January 2017. With this he won team gold and individual bronze at the European championships in the same year .

German national team

from 2001 Chris Bartle was national coach of the German eventing Olympic team together with Hans Melzer. During his term of office some of the greatest successes of the German eventing riders fell, such as the gold medals for the German team and German individual riders at the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012 .

At the end of 2016, Chris Bartle announced that he had applied to be a team coach in the UK. In November of the same year the DOKR announced that he would train the British eventing riders.

Bartle is also a successful individual trainer for several British and German eventing riders. His rich experience led him to co-author the book Training the Sport Horse with Gilliam Newsum .
