The discovery of the menhirs in the Derenburger Stadtforst by the ground monument curator Dieter Oehremann took place in Derenburg in Saxony-Anhalt in 1988 . On a slope, in a birch grove above the Holtemme river, there are 16 menhirs with heights between 0.53 and 1.2 meters over a length of about 96 meters. A comparable facility is on the Hirtenwiesen near Darmstadt, where there were once 14 (today seven) stones to the left and right of the Ruthsenbach.

In the absence of datable finds, it is difficult to interpret stone paintings of this type. However, there are two prehistoric settlements in close proximity. About 1.2 kilometers west-southwest a settlement of the Schnurkeramiker on the Heidekopf and two large settlements of the Walternienburg / Bernburg group of the funnel cup culture (TBK) on the Bocks- and Lieskenberg. According to records of the chroniclers, stool graves are said to have been found in the 19th century immediately south of the early Bronze Age .

context

It is noticeable that some menhir-like objects were connected to megalithic systems or could represent the remains of defunct megalithic systems: Gröna (district of Bernburg (Saale) in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt ); Gütz (district of Landsberg ) and Langeneichstädt (both in the Saale district ); Wandering life ( district of Gotha ); Schankweiler in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate ; Degernau ( district of Wutöschingen , district of Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg ).

Menhirs are only found sporadically in the area of Nordic megalithic architecture.

  • The access to the ramp box in Hill 6 of Halle-Heide was flanked by three menhir-like steles.
  • Next to the narrow side of the sunken chamber of Lie 1 in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel there was originally a large menhir-like stele.
  • In the Klein Polzin 1 district of Vorpommern-Greifswald , on the other hand, a small stele appears to have stood within the chamber as in Wandersleben.

The examples can be subdivided: 1. The menhir-like steles in the burial chamber. An interpretation as a stone cult could be considered here. There are comparable properties in Western Europe and Corsica . 2. The menhir-like steles were located directly next to or above the burial chamber. Also represented in Western Europe (Menhir indicateur) and Corsica. Hans-Jürgen Beier considers these objects to be guardian stones , totems and / or symbolic ancestors.
