Kenki has been riding since he was seven. In his childhood, automobiles did not reach the temple deep in the mountains, but horses were used for locomotion and transportation. His father Shōdō ( 佐藤 正道 ) is abbot ( jūshoku ) of the temple and was nominated in 1980 as a member of the Japanese equestrian team for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, but he could not take part because of the Olympic boycott at the time. Next to the temple there is a riding facility, where his father Shōdō and his brother Eiken , his sister Tae ( 佐藤 泰 ) and Kenki train on horses. Tae won a national equestrian competition five times. Eiken, also a Zen priest, was a member of the Japanese show jumping team for the 2008 Summer Olympics . The equestrian competitions took place in Hong Kong .

Equestrian sport

Kenki decided not to take part in the 2008 Summer Olympics to complete his priestly training.

After his ordination in 2010, he went to the German Olympic participant Dirk Schrade in Sprockhövel to prepare for his 2012 Olympic participation. Since summer 2011 he has been training in Horb -Altheim with the 2012 Olympic champion, world and European champion of eventing rider Michael Jung . Kenki's wife Kiyo, who is responsible for looking after his horses, and their two children as well as his horses Chippieh and Toy Boy now also live in Altheim .

As a participant in the 16th Asian Games in 2010 in Guangzhou , China , he won the gold medal in the individual eventing competition.

At the 2012 Olympic Games he was 15th with his horse Chippieh after the dressage. In the field , however, he fell, which meant the premature end of the competition for him. The Japanese team reached 12th place.

After taking part in the Olympics, he wanted to stay in Germany until winter 2012 and then return to Ogawa. According to Michael Jung's father, however, this plan was rejected: “Kenki cried bitterly in the stable. The next day his parents, who were here in London, came to me and asked if Kenki could continue to be Michael's student, his goal being the 2014 World Cup and the Rio Games . ”So Satō will continue to be based in Germany .
