FEI Nations Cup 2018 (Eventing)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FEI Nations Cup 2018 in eventing (2018 FEI Nations Cup ™ Eventing) was the seventh season of the Nations Cup for eventing .

Course of the tournament series

The 2018 season brought several major changes to the Nations Cup. For the first time, no venue in the German-speaking region was part of the series after the Nations Cup tournament in Wiener Neustadt 2017 remained a one-off event and the CHIO Aachen withdrew from the Nations Cup. The German Nations Cup, which had been part of the Nations Cup series since the series was founded in 2012, was continued outside the series in Aachen. A few other nations swapped the venue for their eventing nation prizes in 2018.

While the classic Nations Cup regulations with up to four riders and a possible cancellation result were applied to most of the stages, the rule change of the Olympic Games from 2020 had an impact on the tournament series. The new Olympic rules were tested at the stages of Strzegom and Millstreet.

Most of the stages were  advertised as CICO 3 *, only the final stage was held differently as CCIO 3 *. The start of the Nations Cup series took place on April 20th in 2018 and ended on October 14th.

The winning team received 100 points in each of the special tests, the following nations got a decreasing number of points. For riders who did not complete the test, the teams each received 1000 minus points in the test. This ensured that all teams finished with a result and thus received evaluation points for the Nations Cup.

The exams

Italy

After no Nations Cup was held in Montelibretti in 2017, Vidigulfo was once again the venue for the Italian Nations Cup in 2018 . The first Nations Cup of this Nations Cup season took place in the district of Vairano, in the immediate vicinity of the Autodromo di Vairano automobile race track. The CICO 3 * tournament was held from April 19-22, 2018.

The French team dominated the test from the start. After the dressage, France was in the lead with 17 minus points, while the other three teams were close together. France won the test, while the Swiss, who had already been knocked off after the cross-country, made a number of mistakes in the jumping and clearly came in last.

United Kingdom

The country estate of Houghton Hall in the county of Norfolk is already the traditional venue for the British Nations Cup in eventing . The Houghton International Horse Trials took place from May 24th to 27th in 2018.

As has often been the case in the Nations Cup, Great Britain used the Houghton Nations Cup to develop riders who were not as experienced internationally. So it happened that six British pairs were among the top ten pairs in the individual ranking (including Laura Collett with three horses), but the British team had no chance. Great Britain was the only team to suffer losses, two riders eliminated in the field meant sixth and thus last place in the team classification. As in the previous year, the German team won the Nations Cup with less than 100 minus points.

Poland

In the middle of the year the Polish Nations Cup tournament Strzegom Horse Trials took place. The tournament was held in Strzegom from June 28 to July 1, 2018 ; in addition to the Nations Cup CICO 3 *, it included five other eventing tests, from the 1 * eventing to the CCI 3 *.

Once again, the CICO 3 * cross-country course proved to be one of the most demanding of the Nations Cup season: 13 of the 40 participants received minus points on the cross-country obstacles, only two rider-horse pairs made it to the finish line within the ideal time. The Strzegom Horse Trials served as a test event for the Olympic regulations planned from 2020 without cancellation results, but with the possibility of exchanging team pairs (for minus points).

Almost all teams therefore only use three riders in the Nations Cup, including the German team, which was victorious last year. The mistake of a strike result meant that Niklas Bschorer's 200 minus points were included in the team standings due to his fall in the field. In the jumping, Bschorer started again in the team classification and made no mistakes, Germany came in fifth with 330.30 minus points.

Austria finished the team ranking in seventh place, almost all the exceptional cases and curiosities of the new set of rules came into play here: Katrin Khoddam Hazrati was eliminated in dressage (100 minus points), then renounced the cross-country test (200 minus points), but then won in jumping the team at the start (error-free, no minus points). Margit Appelt received a result of 39.60 minus points in dressage, gave up in the field (200 minus points) and did not start for the team in jumping either (100 minus points).

The French started with three strong dressage tests and did not show any weaknesses in the terrain, so that Maxime Livio's two obstacle errors in jumping did not endanger their victory. Great Britain brought riders with little international experience between the ages of 28 and 32 to the start. Unlike in Houghton Hall, this strategy proved its worth, with the British finishing second with almost 70 points behind the third-placed Italians. Great Britain was the only team to resort to the possibility of replacing a team rider: Since Coral Keen withdrew her horse in the second constitutional examination, James Sommerville was started for the team in the jumping instead. Although this was rated with 20 minus points, it was more advantageous for the team than 100 minus points for not starting a rider in jumping.

United States of America

The only North American Eventing Nations Cup was held in 2018 in the small town of The Plains in Virginia , 75 km from Washington DC. The Great Meadow International Nations Cup was advertised as a CICO 3 *. It took place on July 7th and 8th, 2018. On the first day of the tournament, dressage and jumping were on the program, while the cross-country test took up the second day.

In the CICO 3 * three teams were at the start. Supplemented by a number of individual starters from the United States, the starting field comprised 46 pairs of participants. The off-road course turned out to be very selective, only five couples got through the finish line in the ideal time, 15 participants did not finish the off-road day (dropped out or given up). The British team secured victory with just under 10 minus points.

France

For the second time, the French Nations Cup tournament was held on the grounds of the French national stud Haras du Pin in Le Merlerault . The CICO 3 * as part of the Le Grand Complet Haras du Pin tournament was held from August 9th to 12th, 2018. The field of participants in the individual evaluation was very extensive with 91 horse-rider pairs, eight nations brought a team to the start.

The cross-country course turned out to be easy to ride, the front half of the teams came without any denials and only with minus points for exceeding the ideal time during the cross-country day. France came through the final jumping with very few mistakes, so that the French already won the third Nations Cup this season. The German team was in second place before the jumping. But little was successful in the last partial test, so that Germany fell behind the Netherlands in third place.

In the individual ranking, Maxime Livio safely won with his dressage result of 26.4 minus points. Mark Todd made a jumping fault in the jump-off with Leonidas II . Since the field behind Livio was close together, Todd dropped from second to ninth place.

Ireland

For Ireland the venue has been changed compared to the previous year, and the Millstreet International Horse Trials have been upgraded to a Nations Cup tournament. The tournament was held from August 22nd to 26th, 2018 in Millstreet in the equestrian center next to the Green Glens Arena .

The new Olympic regulations were also tested in Millstreet as part of the CICO 3 *. Four nations competed in the Nations Cup, Ireland provided two teams. After the dressage, France and the United States were almost tied in the lead, and Great Britain was also almost tied with only one minus point behind. France owes its leadership in particular to Thomas Carlile and his gray stallion Upsilon , who achieved an outstanding dressage result of 83.21 percent, which is the equivalent of 16.50 minus points.

For the US team, which consisted of three riders based in Europe at the time, the off-road day brought disillusionment: Buck Davidson withdrew from the start of his horse Carlevo . Since the team had not brought a reserve pair with them to Millstreet, they received 200 minus points from the terrain (and later 100 minus points from jumping), which made them fall back to the last rank. Great Britain, on the other hand, had a good day off-road, only Francis Whittington got 4.40 minus points for exceeding the ideal time. The French team riders, on the other hand, scored 24.60 minus points, so Great Britain took the lead.

Before jumping, Francis Whittington withdrew his horse Nimrod II . The British team then had to bring their reserve pair to use, which cost them 20 minus points and thus let them fall behind France again. While the British team riders all received minus points on the show jumping course, two French riders stayed clear. This was the fourth victory for the French in this Nations Cup season.

In the individual standings, Thomas Carlile's victory was safe. Only in the field did he exceed the ideal time by two seconds, his lead over the second placed rider was 8.7 minus points in the end result. The event was overshadowed by the death of the gelding Country Dreams , who fell together with his rider Patrick Martin Byrne on the cross-country course.

Belgium

The Belgian Nations Cup tournament of the eventing riders International Eventing Waregem was held from 20 to 23 September 2018. It took place at the same time as the second week of the 2018 World Equestrian Games . Although the eventing competitions of the World Equestrian Games were already over by this time, only a few riders were at the start at both events. Nevertheless, the starting field was strong, eight nations competed with teams.

After the dressage, the German team was at the top of the rankings and expanded this lead in jumping even further, as three German riders made no mistakes. Great Britain was in second place after the jumping with a deficit of 13.5 minus points.

The off-road day suffered from difficult conditions. Due to heavy rain, the ground was sodden, some riders didn't even start. The ideal time of seven minutes was not achievable under these circumstances: The fastest rides required more than 10 seconds more time, but some riders also need more than eight minutes for the course. The results of all teams increased significantly. Julia Mestern's fall on the cross-country course meant that Germany lost its top position. The British team, which also suffered the fall of one of their riders, moved up to first place and won the test.

In the individual ranking, Julia Krajewski was also at the start after a very good dressage and otherwise unhappy World Equestrian Games. After the dressage and after the jumping she was in second place behind Michael Jung. While Jung and Lennox chose a significantly reduced pace in the terrain and dropped back to 21st place, Krajewski decided on a drafty cross-country ride with Samourai du Thot . After 7:12 minutes, she crossed the finish line as the fastest rider and moved up to first place.

Netherlands

The season finale was the only Nations Cup stage at the 3 * long-term test level (CCIO 3 *). The Netherlands Nations Cup tournament was held in Boekelo from October 11-14, 2018 . The prize money that was distributed at the Military Boekelo tournament amounted to 47,700 euros.

After the dressage, Germany and Great Britain were almost level at the top, the Netherlands followed with a good two minus points. The ideal time on the off-road day was achievable, but challenging. While the favored teams mostly got through the terrain without any major problems, other nations paid tribute to the higher level with a land test and fell behind in the rankings. Two refusals during Nicolas Touzaint's ride threw France's team back significantly and ultimately cost the overall victory of the 2018 season. New Zealand started without a reserve pair. Since all three riders of the team had to accept a refusal in the area, the team almost fell back to the end of the interim result.

In the jumping test, the German team riders made several obstacle errors and thus brought tension to the decision about victory. But the rides of Pippa Funnell and Izzy Taylor in the show jumping course did not go as expected either, so Great Britain stayed in second place. There was also a German victory in the individual standings: like Waregem, Julia Krajewski won in Boekelo with the 12-year-old gelding Samourai du Thot . Tim Lips had clearly won the dressage with less than 20 minus points, remained error-free in the area, but two errors in jumping threw him back to third.

Overall rating

France dominated the 2018 season, the French won four of eight stages of the tournament series. Nevertheless, they narrowly missed the overall victory: Great Britain, which took part in nine Nations Cups (and thus one more than France) benefited from the less fortunate tournament of the French at the last stage in Boekelo and at the end of the season pushed itself 30 points ahead of the first Space.
