The Hangul Day (also date of delivery of Hangul or days of the Korean alphabet is) a national day of remembrance Korea commemorating the invention and promulgation of the Korean alphabet , the Hangul by King Sejong , in South Korea on October 9 and in North Korea is celebrated on January 15th .

The status of Hangeul Day as a public holiday was abolished in South Korea in 1991 under pressure from leading employers to increase the number of working days. In 2013, the old status as a public holiday was reintroduced.

In North Korea, the holiday called Chosŏn'gŭl Day is celebrated on January 15, since it is assumed there that on that day in 1444 (or 1443 according to the lunar calendar) the so-called Hunmin Jeongeum , the text for the introduction of the new Alphabet, was created. The day is not celebrated on a grand scale, as it is assumed that the signs existed before and were only ordered by King Sejong. It is assumed that no new font was created, but an older one was simply continued. In South Korea, it is believed that the text was published on October 9, 1446.
