Patrick Köllner (born March 10, 1968 in Hamburg ) is a German political scientist .

Patrick Köllner studied administrative science at the University of Konstanz from 1988 to 1993 . 1991/1992 followed by postgraduate studies on contemporary Japan at the University of Essex . From 1993 to 1997 a doctoral degree in political science followed at the Humboldt University in Berlin (HU). In 1998 he did his doctorate with Michael Kreile at the HU Berlin on South Korea's technological dependence on Japan. In 2005 he completed his habilitation at the University of Trier . From 1996 to 2007 he was a research fellow at the GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies , responsible for politics in Japan as well as politics and economics on the Korean peninsula. From 2007 to 2011 he was acting director of the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies. Since July 2011 he has been Director and since 2017 Vice President of the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies.

Köllner is an expert on questions about political developments in Korea. He researches Japanese domestic politics and authoritarian regimes in international comparison and has published on parties and elections in Japan and South Korea. He is a member of the American Political Science Association (APSA), the Association of Asian Studies , the Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE), the British Association for Japanese Studies (BAJS), the British Association for Korean Studies (BAKS) and in the German Association for Political Science .
