Natalino Monteiro Gonçalves (born June 5, 1963 in Ritabou , Portuguese Timor ) was the 1999 commander of the pro- Indonesian militia ( Wanra ) Dadarus Merah Putih (DMP), which is held responsible for numerous acts of violence during Operation Donner 1999.

Career

After finishing elementary school in Maliana , Monteiro went to senior high school in Belu , Indonesia , across the border in West Timor . In 1984 he began a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences at the University of Brawijaya in Malang on Java . For his degree he worked in 1989 in the agricultural authority of occupied East Timor and taught in Dili at the Universitas Timor Timur . He later began a master's degree at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta . In 1994, after completing his studies, he returned to the University of Dili and became the third deputy rector with responsibility for student affairs. Since he was aiming for the post of rector, he needed a permit from the Indonesian military , which is why he completed a military course in Lemhannas in Jakarta in 1996 . However, Monteiro lacked the support of the students, so that Armindo Maia became the new rector instead .

After the announcement of the independence referendum in East Timor in 1999 on January 27 of the same year, Monteiro began to work with the Kopassus secret service to set up the DMP in his home village of Ritabou. Monteiro was also chairman of the pro-Indonesian political association Forum Persatuan, Demokrasi dan Keadilan (FPDK, German  forum for unity, democracy and justice ) in Maliana and vice-chairman in the Bobonaro district . The DMP quickly acquired a reputation for extreme brutality. As early as April she was responsible for murders and arson in the Bobonaro district. The military district commander, Lieutenant Colonel Burhanuddin Siagian, initiated and coordinated all militias in the district .

On June 29, Monteiro ordered the attack on the UNAMET office in Lahomea . Several people were injured. On September 8th, the massacre occurred in the Maliana police station, of which Monteiro was found guilty of crimes against humanity in absentia on July 10th, 2003 in Dili. At that time it was assumed that Monteiro was in Jakarta.
