Ritabou is an East Timorese town and Suco in the Maliana administrative office ( Bobonaro municipality ).

Ritabou is located in the south of the Sucos at an altitude of 281  m above sea level. The place has a helipad, a primary school ( Escola Primaria Ritabou ) and a secondary school.

The Suco has 6,617 inhabitants (2015), of which 3,416 are men and 3201 women. The population density is 74.7 inhabitants / km². There are 1105 households in the Suco. It is classified as urban. Over 55% of the population name Tetum Prasa as their mother tongue. Over 40% speak Kemak and under 5% speak Bunak .

Before the 2015 territorial reform, Ritabou had an area of ​​95.26 km². Now there are 88.61 km². The Suco forms the northeast of the Maliana administrative office. In the southwest, Ritabou borders on the Sucos Tapo / Memo , Odomau , Raifun , Lahomea and Saburai, which also belong to Maliana . To the west is the Suco Leolima ( Balibo administrative office ). To the northwest is the Suco Hataz ( Atabae Administrative Office ). In the northeast is the administrative office of Cailaco with its sucos Meligo , Manapa and Raiheu . In the southeast, Ritabou borders the administrative office of Bobonaro with its Sucos Ilat-Laun , Atu-Aben , Malilait , Oeleo and Tapo .

The Sasso river forms the border with Tapo / Memo. The Buloho ( Bulobu ) flows along the border with Lahomea and part of the border with Raifun, before turning north and crossing Ritabou. Further tributaries into the Buloho from Ritabou are Gelesu and Biusosso . Then the Buloho follows roughly the boundaries of Manapa and Meligo, before, like the Sasso before, it flows into the Nunura , which is called Nunutura here . The Nunura forms the border with Leolima and Hataz. The Anaslota River , later called Anasola , flows along the border with the Bobonaro Administrative Office. The Biabuil crosses the south of Ritabou and finally forms with the Anasola the Babonasolan river , which is a tributary of the Marobo and belongs to the Lóis river system .

In the southern part of Ritabou, south of the Biabuil River, are the villages of Galusapulu , Anahun ( Anahon ), Lakatil , Timatan and Uat . The first three are on the country road from Maliana to Carabau . The towns of Lonbia ( Loribia ), Maganutu and Ma'a Hui ( Maahui , Maahai ) lie between Biabuil and Gelesu . Between Gelesu and Buloho are the places Lug Lali ( Lugutuli , Lugululi ), Magalelor and Ritiudu . To the west of the Buloho are the villages of Ritabou , Koloana , Samelaun ( Samelau ), Diruaben ( Diruabe , Dinrabe ), Deabubu ( Beabubu ) and Samutaben on the country road from Maliana to Hatolia Vila . Other places in the west of Ritabou are Beasale , Moleana , Cor Luli ( Corluli , Korlule ), Halecou Baru ( Alecou Baru ) and Halecou Lana ( Alecou Lana , Alecou Lama ). Public institutions in addition to those in Ritabou are the primary schools in Moleana and Timatan, the vocational school in Cor Luli ( Escola Vocasional Cor Luli ) and the helipad in Moleana. To the north of Lonbia and Maganutu rises the Leolaco , a steep face that extends almost seven kilometers to the north into the administrative office of Cailaco.

In the Suco there are the twelve Aldeias Cor Luli , Dai Tete , Diruaben , Halecou , Ma'a Hui , Maganutu , Moleana , Ritabou , Ritiudu , Samelaun , Timatan and Uat .

In 1963 Natalino Monteiro was born in Ritabou , the commander of the pro-Indonesian militia Dadarus Merah Putih DMP ( Red White Tornado ). This militia, one of six in the community, was based in Ritabou and quickly gained a reputation for being particularly brutal.

On March 19, 1999 , in the run-up to the independence referendum in East Timor , members of the Halilintar militia attacked a meeting of independence supporters. Four people died. More murders by Halilintar and DMP followed in Ritabou. Among other things, the DMP was also involved in the massacre in the Maliana police station on September 8, 1999, in which Domingos Gonçalves Pereira , the Chefe de Suco of Ritabou, was murdered. Monteiro was convicted in absentia on July 10, 2003 for crimes against humanity and his role in the September 8, 1999 massacre.

On the day of the vote, on August 30, 1999, the polling station in Ritabou was set on fire.

politics

In 1999 Domingos Gonçalves Pereira was the Chefe de Suco of Ritabou. He was one of the victims of the massacre in the Maliana Police Station on September 8, 1999.

In the 2004/2005 election , Abel was elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections , Maria Soares de Jesus Rosa won . She was the only woman elected Chefe de Suco in 2009 in the Bobonaro community. 2016 was Maximiano dos Santos Araújo new Chefe de Suco.
