Matias Boavida

Matías Freitas Boavida (born November 6, 1968 ) is a politician and university professor from East Timor and a member of the FRETILIN party .

Career

In 1998 Boavida graduated from Universitas Timor Timur (UNTIM) with a degree in political science . In 2005 he received a Diploma in Applied Social Science Methods from Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Australia . From 2007 onwards, Boavida studied at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (ISCSP) of the Technical University of Lisbon and graduated with a master's degree in 2009.

From 1987 to 1999 Boavida worked as a civil servant in the Indonesian- occupied East Timor. From March 2000 he worked at the Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL) at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Políticas and at the Center for Gender Studies as a lecturer and researcher. From 2000 to 2007 he was also employed in various positions at the United Nations in East Timor. From January 2001 to May 2004 he worked as an administrative assistant for the International Armed Forces East Timor (INTERFET) and traveled as an election observer to the general election in Portugal in 2002 . Until the end of 2004, Boavida worked as a research fellow in the program for land and property law before he attended a seminar of the Australian Association of Postgraduate Council (CAPA) in New Zealand in March 2005 .

After studying in Lisbon , Boavida worked again as a lecturer at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Políticas of the UNTL. He also took on various other tasks in parallel. From March to June 2010 Boavida worked as a researcher on the Advisory Board of the National Petroleum Fund, from June 2010 to December 2012 as a public servant for political affairs at UNMIT and from January to March 2013 as a member of the advisory team of Finn Reske-Nielsen , the last UN -Special Envoy for East Timor . From January 2011 to 2015, Boavida headed the Public Policy Department of the UNTL Faculty of Social Sciences. Since December 2014 he has also worked as a presenter for Televisão de Timor Leste (TVTL) and, from 2017, on the radio and television program of Radio Televisão Mareinigung (RTM).

On October 3rd, Boavida was sworn in as State Secretary for the Council of Ministers and Social Communications in the VII Government of East Timor . His term of office ended on June 22, 2018 when the Eighth Government of East Timor took office.

In addition to Tetum and the East Timorese regional languages Galoli and Makasae , Boavida also speaks English , Portuguese and Indonesian .
