Aurélio Sérgio Cristóvão Guterres (born July 27, 1966 in Venilale , Portuguese Timor ) is an academic and politician from East Timor . He is a member of FRETILIN.

Career

Guterres completed his entire school years until his graduation in 1983 at the school of São José in Balide ( Dili ). Then he was a math teacher at the Portuguese school for two years. In 1986 Guterres finished his teaching post to study law and development aid at the University of Satya Wacana (Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana UKSW) in the Indonesian Salatiga . He graduated with a bachelor's degree. From 1993 to 1995 followed a bachelor's degree at Massey University in New Zealand . Guterres also holds a Masters and a PhD in Development Studies (Doctor of Philosophy in Development Studies). He completed his studies for this from 2000 to 2003, also at Massey University.

After graduating from Salatiga, Guterres returned to East Timor in 1991 and became a teacher at the Universitas Timor Timur (UnTim), now the Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL), at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol).

Before he was appointed Rector of UNTL in 2010, Guterres had already taught for 28 years. He was also a consultant to several national and international organizations. Guterres had close contacts with Finland and was therefore an agent for Finnish development aid in East Timor. He was also an advisor to Bakornas, the National Council for Disaster Coordination, a member of the East Timorese Petroleum Organization, a member of the State Council elected by parliament from 2005 to 2007 and a member of the Executive Council of the East Timorese Red Cross (CVTL) from 2010 to 2014 . Guterres remained Rector of the UNTL until 2016.

On September 15, 2017, Guterres was sworn in as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in the VII Government of East Timor . His term of office ended on June 22, 2018 when the Eighth Government of East Timor took office.

Currently (as of 2019) Guterres is a non-executive member of the board of the Central Bank of East Timor .

Guterres is married to Umbelina Borromeo and has three children. He speaks Portuguese, English, Indonesian and Tetum .
