Roberto Sarmento de Oliveira Soares is an East Timorese politician and diplomat. From 2015 to 2017 he was Vice Minister for External Affairs and Cooperation. Soares does not belong to any party.

Career

Soares has worked for the East Timorese Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2000.

In 2002, Olímpio Branco , the previous Secretary General of the East Timorese Foreign Ministry , became the new Deputy Foreign Minister. From September on, he was initially replaced by an executive team that took over the post every four months on a rotation basis. This consisted of Nelson Santos , as director for bilateral relations, Vicky Tchong , administrative director and Roberto Soares, director for regional affairs. On January 1, 2004, Santos was initially appointed ad interim sole general secretary. Soares has been promoted to General Director for Cooperation and Regional Integration. From 2008 to 2010 Soares worked as chairman of the technical sub-committee on the demarcation and regulation between East Timor and Indonesia . In 2009 he was the spokesman for socialization and dissemination for the Truth and Friendship Commission of East Timor and Indonesia. On January 29, 2009 Soares was appointed East Timor's first ambassador to Singapore and Brunei . Accreditation in Singapore was held on March 26, in Brunei on 19 October 2010. He was later replaced by chargé Domingos Savio from.

August 8, 2012 to February 16, 2015 Soares was under Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão in the V. government of the country of State for Relations with ASEAN . With the government reshuffle under Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araújo , Soares became Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, succeeding Constâncio Pinto , who is now Deputy Minister for Trade, Industry and the Environment. When the VII government took office on September 15, 2017, his term in the cabinet ended.
