Olímpio Maria Alves Gomes Miranda Branco is an East Timorese independence activist, politician and diplomat.

Career

Branco was one of the residents of the Casa dos Timores in Lisbon . In 1974 he was one of the first members of the Associação Social Democrática Timorense (ASDT), which was renamed FRETILIN a few months later .

Shortly afterwards Indonesia invaded East Timor and the FRETILIN went into armed struggle against the invaders. Part of the FRETILIN leadership went into exile overseas. Branco became Vice-Representative of FRETILIN in Europe and spokesman for the party in Lisbon .

In 1999 Indonesia withdrew from East Timor and after three years of administration by the United Nations , the country was given independence again. FRETILIN received an absolute majority in the national parliament and constituted the government. Branco became Secretary General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2002 the previous Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation José Luís Guterres left the cabinet in order to become East Timor’s Ambassador to the United States and the United Nations the following year . Branco became the new deputy foreign minister.

At the end of 2005 Branco Leonor Cardoso replaced Mendes Mota as East Timor's ambassador in China . In 2011 he gave up the post in the People's Republic of China to Vicky Tchong and in 2012 he became East Timor’s Ambassador to Cuba , succeeding Egídio de Jesus . Branco kept the office until he was replaced by Loro Horta in 2016 .

In 2019 Branco was sworn in as the new ambassador to Brazil .

Honors

On May 19, 2012 Branco was awarded the Insígnia des Ordem de Timor-Leste .
