Boughton grew up in Sydney . He received his intermediate diploma in 1975 from the University of Sydney . For the next 20 years he worked as a development worker and adult educator in Australian Aboriginal communities before continuing his studies in the mid-1990s. In May 1998 Boughton received his doctorate and until 2002 took a research position at the Cooperative Research Center (CRC) for "Aboriginal Health". In January he received his first appointment to the University of New England. In January 2009 he became an associate professor.
Boughton's research focuses on four interrelated topics: Aboriginal adult education, the role of education as a determinant of health in Aboriginal communities, the history and theory of radical adult education (more commonly referred to as "popular education") and the development of adult education in East Timor .
Commitment to East Timor
As a student at the University of Sydney, Boughton first learned of the political situation in East Timor in early 1975. His fellow student Tim Rowse had traveled to what was then Portuguese Timor as part of a delegation from the student union , which was being prepared for independence. Rowse met the young leaders of the independence movement and reported back in Australia about their efforts to create an independent country after the end of Portuguese colonial rule. The Australian students formed a support group and were shocked when Indonesia in invaded East Timor and annexed. About the acts of violence during the guerrilla war one found out about the violence on the radio .
After the Indonesians left, Boughton visited East Timor. The leadership of FRETILIN asked him for assistance in developing an adult education system, the specialty of Boughton and his wife Deborah. A national literacy campaign was started together with the Ministry of Education . Most of the work was done by Timorese and a group of 35 adult educators from Cuba . Boughton continued to work on the campaign from 2006 to 2012.
Awards
On May 6, 2015, Boughton was awarded the Medal des Ordem de Timor-Leste by President Taur Matan Ruak in recognition of his commitment to the independence of East Timor.
