Tim Rowse

Tim Rowse is an Australian professor.

Career

In 1974 Rowse received a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney , 1977 a master's degree from Flinders University in South Australia and in 1991 a doctorate from the University of Sydney.

Since the early 1980s, his research has focused on the relationships between Indians and other Australians in Central Australia, where he lived from 1989 to 1996, and in national politics. The research resulted in two books on the life and work of HC Coombs , the first president of the Reserve Bank of Australia , in the 1990s .

His publications deal primarily with historical topics. He did research mainly on Australian history, especially the native colonial history; and 20th century Australian history, including government policies toward Aboriginal people and Aboriginal responses to colonization, cultural policies, and the history of official statistics.

At the University of Western Sydney , Rowse was Professor at the School of Humanities and Communication Arts and Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Culture and Society. He has also taught at Macquarie University , the Australian National University and Harvard University , where he held the Chair of Australian Studies from 2003 to 2004. He also took part in research projects at the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne , the University of Queensland and the Australian National University.

Commitment to East Timor

As part of a delegation from the Student Union, Tim Rowse visited what was then Portuguese Timor in March 1975 , which was being prepared for independence. Rowse met the young leaders of the independence movement and, back in Australia, reported on their efforts to create an independent country after the end of Portuguese colonial rule. Together with Bob Boughton and other Australian students, he founded a support group. They were shocked when Indonesia in invaded East Timor and annexed. About the acts of violence during the guerrilla war one found out about the violence on the radio . During this time Rowse was a member of the Communist Party of Australia (CPA).

  • 2003 Awarded the Australian Government Centenary Medal for work in Australian and Indigenous Research.
  • 2010 Awarded the Henry Mayer Prize by the Australian Political Studies Association for the best article published in the APSA Australian Journal of Political Studies in 2009.
  • 2018 nominee for the Ernest Scott Prize and the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History for Indigenous and other Australians since 1901
