The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is Australia's central bank based in Sydney . The central bank is headed by Governor Glenn Stevens .
The central bank was established in 1960 and derives its functions and powers from the Reserve Bank Act 1959 . The main objectives of the bank are to maintain price stability, to ensure full employment and economic prosperity for the Australian people and to support the economic policies of the Australian government. It manages the national currency, the Australian dollar , issues themed banknotes and coins and holds the national currency reserves.
The RBA provides certain banking services as required by the Australian Government and its agencies and a number of overseas central banks and official institutions. In addition, it manages Australia's gold and foreign exchange reserves.
