The Universidade da Paz (UNPAZ, German  University of Peace ) is a private university in the East Timorese capital Dili . It is one of nine universities in the country recognized by the Agência Nacional para a Avaliação e Acreditação Académica (ANAAA) and the largest private institution of its kind in East Timor. The accreditation took place in 2009.

UNPAZ was founded in March 2004 by the Neon Metin Foundation , which was created by a group of East Timorese intellectuals to improve the situation of higher education in the country. The only other university in the country is the state Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL). 8,779 students (2015) study at UNPAZ under the guidance of around 250 teachers. 65 people work in administration. UNPAZ cooperates with several universities in Indonesia , Australia , the Philippines and Malaysia . The UNPAZ is also a member of the United Board of Asian Christian Universities , a network of 132 universities in the region. She is also a member of the DIES ASEAN-QA Internal Track Dialogue Meeting , which is located at the University of Potsdam . Further memberships exist with the Africa-Carabean-Pacific (APC) Forum , the Asian Universities Network (AUN) and the Asian Quality Assurance Network (AQAN). Membership in the Asian Human Rights Association Network (AHRAN) is in preparation.

Faculties and departments

There are currently six faculties at UNPAZ.

  1. The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities with the departments for International Relations, Development Policy and Peace Studies
  2. The Faculty of Economics with the departments of Management, Accounting and Banking
  3. The law faculty with the division into criminal and civil law
  4. The Faculty of Engineering with the departments of Architecture and Industrial Engineering
  5. The Faculty of Health Care with the Department of Health Care Management
  6. The Faculty of Agricultural Technology with the Post-Harvest Management Department

In order to bring educational opportunities to the other regions of East Timor, the UNPAZ created so-called social classes for law, health care, management, accounting, political science and agricultural engineering in the communities of Ainaro , Bobonaro , Oe-Cusse Ambeno , Baucau , Manufahi , Cova Lima , Ermera and Liquiçá .

In 2004 the Centro de Estudos e Paz estratégicos (CePAZ, German  Center for Strategic Studies and Peace Research ) was founded as a research institute at the UNPAZ.

campus

The UNPAZ campus is located in Osindo in Suco Manleuana , in the west of Dili. Six main buildings with a total area of ​​around 4,000 m² are located on 30,000 m². A seventh building with 1,300 m² is under construction. On campus there is also the multifunctional, so-called "Canopy" ( German  canopy ) with 820 m². In the neighboring municipality of Liquiçá, a satellite campus with 50,000 m² is currently being built, which is intended for the natural science faculties.

Current and former lecturers

Of the current 214 teachers, 171 work full-time. There are also guest lecturers from Indonesia and the Philippines. UNPAZ has six professors, ten lecturers with a Ph.D. and 65 with a master. The other forces have no academic title.
