Lucas da Costa (born January 11, 1952 in Atsabe , Ermera , Portuguese Timor ; † September 5, 2019 in Dili , East Timor ), battle name Rama Metan (other battle names used: Lahe Mau, 4, Colimau, Asa-Bere) a politician from East Timor, member of the Partido Democrático (PD) and chairman of the National Political Commission of the PD. He was also director of the Universidade da Paz (UNPAZ) in the state capital Dili.

Career

Lucas da Costa was the third son of Raimundo Gonçalves and Lahe-Mau. In addition to his two brothers, he also had two sisters.

1974/1975 Costa was a delegate in the presidium of the FRETILIN regional committee in Manufahi . On August 15, 1975, four days after the UDT coup , he joined the armed arm of FRETILIN, FALINTIL , in Aissirimou ( Aileu ) . In September Costa was transferred to Atsabe. On December 6th, the Indonesian invaders reached Atsabe. Costa continued to resist in Hatulia and Fatubessi . He commanded a combat group that was involved in skirmishes with the Indonesians in Atsabe. With his group, the Antenas da Resistencia or Grupu Analiza Politíka , he listened to radio programs in various languages. Because of this information work, Costa was appointed director of the East Timorese Red Cross by Nicolau dos Reis Lobato in 1976 . In 1978 Costa was caught in an Indonesian ambush and captured. He was imprisoned for two years and then released.

As a student in Bali , Indonesia , Costa was one of the founding members of the Resistência Nacional dos Estudantes de Timor-Leste RENETIL in 1988 . From 1991 he was a member of the eight-member presidium. In 1998 Costa became a member of the National Political Commission and the Executive Commission of the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense (CNRT).

From 2007 to 2012 Costa was a member of the National Parliament of East Timor and here in the Commission for Economic Affairs, Finance and Anti-Corruption (Commission C). When also in the west of the country originating PD Group chairman Adriano do Nascimento to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Mariano Sabino Lopes (also PD) accused, all positions of the party in government would only persons from the eastern part of the country occupied and therefore also demanded a post for himself, Nascimento received support from Costa and the MP Vital dos Santos . They threatened to vote against the formation of the ruling coalition Aliança da Maioria Parlamentar (AMP) in parliament . Nascimento eventually became Secretary of State for Tourism.

On January 24, Costa announced his candidacy in Gleno in the 2012 presidential elections in East Timor , although his party leader Fernando de Araújo also ran . Costa received 0.83% of the vote in the elections, Araújo 17.30%.

Costa died on September 5, 2019 in the Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares in Dili. He was buried in the Heroes' Cemetery in Metinaro .
