Heroes' cemetery in Metinaro
The cemetery of the heroes and martyrs of the fatherland ( Portuguese Jardim dos Heróis e Martires da Pátria ) is East Timor's national cemetery for former fighters and activists of the war of independence against Indonesia (1975-1999). It is located near Manleu ( Suco Wenunuc , Metinaro administrative office , Dili municipality ), east of the state capital Dili .
In the cemetery there are both FALINTIL guerrillas who died in battle and people who died after the war. It was inaugurated on August 29, 2009, the day before the tenth anniversary of the independence referendum . On this occasion, the first 420 fallen FALINTIL fighters were reburied here, the remains of which had been found in the wild. The second burial is an important part of some cultures in East Timor, such as the Kemak .
