Jaime Ribeiro (born April 15, 1959 in Liquiçá , Portuguese Timor ; † June 30, 2019 in Dili , East Timor ), fighting name Samba 9, Samba Sembilan, Sambilan , was an East Timorese freedom fighter.

Career

As a member of the Forças Armadas de Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste (FALINTIL), Ribeiro fought the entire Indonesian occupation (1975-1999) against the invaders. From 1981 he was group leader, from 1986 to 1991 platoon leader and from 1992 to 1999 second regional commander in Region III. On November 9, 1998, he attacked the headquarters of the Indonesian sub-district territorial command (Koramil) in Alas , contrary to the instructions of FALINTIL boss Xanana Gusmão , who during this period of negotiations called for restraint in military action . Three Indonesian soldiers were killed and 13 captured. Eleven soldiers were later released. Nine FALINTIL fighters were also killed. The Indonesian army responded with a week-long punitive action in the Alas region .

In 1999 FALINTIL was transferred to a regular army as part of the re-establishment of the state of East Timor . Ribeiro preferred to return to civilian life. As a veteran of the liberation struggle, he received a state pension. Ribeiro used it to support his hometown.

In 2006 Ribeiro was awarded the Ordem da Guerrilha . On November 28, 2018, he received the Collar des Ordem de Timor-Leste from President Francisco Guterres . Most recently, Ribeiro was an activist for the Partidu Libertasaun Popular (PLP) in his home town of Liquiçá. He died on June 30th in the Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares in the state capital Dili .

Ribeiro was buried in the Heroes' Cemetery in Metinaro . He left three daughters and four sons.
