André da Costa Belo

André da Costa Belo (born May 12, 1957 in Atelari , Laga , Baucau , Portuguese Timor ; † November 12, 2018 in Fatuhada , Dili , East Timor ), battle name L4 , was a veteran of East Timor's struggle for independence against Indonesia and an East Timorese politician. Costa was the third vice-rector of the Universidade de Díli (UNDIL) and held the title of professor.

Career

During the Indonesian occupation until 1999, Costa was a member of the FALINTIL guerrilla movement , which armed against the occupation. In 1981 he surrendered to the Indonesians, but co-founded the organizations Santo Antonio (1983) and Sagrada Família (1989), which were considered resistance groups. At Sagrada Família, Belo became deputy boss under Cornélio da Conceição Gama (L7).

In 2004 veterans clashed with police , after which 31 people were arrested. Gama and Costa were among them. President Xanana Gusmão personally mediated the conflict.

In 2006 Costa appeared as the spokesman for the National Movement of the East Timorese Resistance (MONVERTIL).

In the UNDERTIM party founded by Gama in 2005, Costa was also deputy chairman until it broke up due to internal quarrels. Gama and Costa became members of the Partidu Libertasaun Popular (PLP). Costa was the first party spokesman for the PLP until he was replaced by Fidelis Leite Magalhães in June 2017 . In the parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2017 , Costa unsuccessfully came 17th on the PLP list.

Since 2015, Costa has been UNDIL's third vice-rector, responsible for student affairs. He was also first secretary to the board of directors of BOAKRIL, the university's foundation.

On September 29, 2017, Belo was appointed Secretary of State for Veterans. His term of office as State Secretary ended when the Eighth Government of East Timor took office on June 22, 2018.

On November 12, 2018, Belo died at the age of 59 in his home in Dili's Fatuhada district and was buried with military honors in the Heroes' Cemetery in Metinaro .
