The AMRT is located in the building of the former Portuguese colonial court on Rua Formosa , which was partially destroyed in September 1999 during the wave of violence . The premises have an area of 1325 m² and the associated garden 1200 m².

In 2005 the first general renovation and conversion took place under the architect Tania Bettencourt Correia in order to be able to use the building for the AMRT. The financial resources were initially only sufficient for the central area of around 500 m². After all, the first parts of the exhibition could be opened on December 7th.

On May 20, 2012, the tenth anniversary of the restoration of East Timor’s independence, President Taur Matan Ruak , together with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and Portuguese President Cavaco Silva , opened the AMRT in its current form.

museum

The permanent exhibition "Resistir é Vencer" ( German  resistance is victory ) shows the history of the guerrilla war against the Indonesians and their most important protagonists. In addition, exhibits, pictures and sound recordings are presented. In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are also temporary exhibitions from the Ministry of Culture and from the collection of the National Museum on various events in the history of East Timor .

archive

Collection of documents about the resistance in the country
Reading room

Numerous documents about the resistance movement were donated to the archive by the population in ceremonies across the country. Many documents were in poor condition and urgently needed to be preserved. In addition, there was a lengthy identification and classification of the documents, with which Timorese who had been active in the resistance themselves helped. This was especially necessary for the identification of the numerous abbreviations, pseudonyms and names. There were also problems because the papers were written in different languages. Not only in Portuguese , but also in Bahasa Indonesia , Tetum and in the various local languages .

The Portuguese Fundação Mário Soares FMS established numerous collaborations for the archive with various institutions in Portugal and other countries of the CPLP . AMRT Director José Agostinho Sequeira worked with FMS in Lisbon from August 2002 to May 2006 and made a total of three journeys in East Timor to collect documents.

Methods were developed for the preservation of documents, training, IT and for the transmission of the relevant documents of the institutions. The papers were photographed, digitized and sorted chronologically and thematically.

In January 2013, FMS created an internet portal to make the documents generally accessible. Free internet connections are available to the public in the reading room of the AMRT. The AMRT also has a local version of the electronic archive so that the files can be accessed independently of unstable internet connections.

Directors

The first director of the AMRT was José Agostinho Sequeira, who became deputy minister of the interior in July 2006. He was followed by the current director Antóninho Baptista Alves (as of 2017).
