Elvina Sousa Carvalho (born July 18, 1986 in Ermera , East Timor ) is a politician from East Timor. She is a member of the Partido Democrático (PD) and President of the Organização Mulher Democrático .

Career

Carvalho is the eldest child of Maria Imaculada Carvalho and Domingos Sousa de Deus and has three sisters and two brothers. Elvina attended the Public Primary School No. 2 in Gleno , then the Pre-Secondary School 10 de Abril there and finally the Public Secondary School Nino Konis Santana .

She took part in the Japanese exchange program JENESYS2015 Young Politicians and Young Diplomats Group and has a degree in social and human sciences from Universidade da Paz (UNPAZ) and a certificate from the Konrad Adenauer School for Young Politicians (KASYP) (2012-2014). Carvalho is also a member of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Young Political Leaders Caucus (KASYP-LC). Various conferences and workshops followed in Myanmar , Singapore , South Korea , Malaysia and Germany. In 2006 Carvalho volunteered for the non-governmental organization Friends of Ermera , assisted two Australian journalists for two months in the same year and in 2014 worked in the office of the Secretary of State for Local Development.

Since the beginning of her studies in 2007 she was politically active and a member of the Organizasaun Juventude Demokratiku, the youth organization of the PD. In 2011 Carvalho was elected the second deputy general secretary of Organização Mulher Democrático (OMD), the PD women's organization. In January 2017, she was elected President of OMD.

In the parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2017 , Carvalho ran for third place on the PD party list and thus moved into the national parliament as a member of parliament. On September 6, she was elected deputy secretary in the Parliament's Bureau. She was also a member of the Ethics Committee (Committee G). Since the minority government of FRETILIN and PD could not prevail in parliament, President Francisco Guterres dissolved it and called for new elections. In the new elections on May 12, 2018 , Carvalho managed to return to third place on the PD list and re-entered parliament, where the PD now belongs to the opposition. Carvalho is now a member of the Commission for Education, Youth, Culture and Citizens' Rights (Commission G).
