Bruno Böhmer Camacho (* 1985 in Barranquilla ) is a German-Colombian jazz musician (piano, composition).

Böhmer Camacho comes from a family of musicians: his maternal grandfather was the composer Ángel María Camacho y Cano (1901–1993), a promoter of Caribbean music. He learned to play the piano from his mother, the concert pianist Lyra Mercedes Camacho. After taking lessons in harmony , composition and arrangement , he founded the jazz ensemble Latin Sampling at the age of nine , which has presented itself at several jazz festivals in South America. At the age of 17 he began his studies at the Folkwang School with Peter Herborn , Thomas Hufschmidt and Peter Walter . With a scholarship he continued his education at the Berklee School of Musicwhere vibraphonist Vince Mendoza selected him for the Berklee All Star Band .

During his studies, Böhmer Camacho worked with musicians such as Roy Louis , Stevie Woods , Andy Narell , César Pérez, Nene Vásquez, Cuba Nova and the European Jazz Ensemble. With his quintet Latin Sampling he released the album Secrets in 2006 . With the bass player Juan Camillo Villa and the drummer Rodrigo Villalón, whom he had known since school, he founded his Bruno Böhmer Camacho Trio , which released Herencia's debut album in 2008 , on which he interpreted his grandfather's works as well as his own. In 2011, Nostalgic Vision followed with a larger cast , and in 2014 his The Colombian Project . In addition, he has been active as a pianist in the German-Cuban formation Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion since 2010 , for which he also composes and arranges. He is considered one of the leading Latin jazz pianists in Central Europe.

Prizes and awards

At the age of 16, Böhmer Camacho won first prize in the young talent competition “ Jugend jazzt ” in Bonn. In 2006 he was awarded the Folkwang Prize for the best jazz student; In 2008 he and his trio received the “best ensemble” award there. In the following year he was awarded the support award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for young artists . In 2013 he received the 100 Colombianos award as one of the most internationally successful Colombians.
