Roy Louis

Roy Louis (born July 1954 in Willemstad , Curacao ) is a Dutch jazz guitarist and bassist, composer and arranger.

Career

Roy Louis played guitar in his older brother Elmer's school band at the age of 6.

Louis was mainly due to the English blues and rock bands and the Beatles inspired until a documentary about Woodstock from 1969 with Sly Stone , Jimi Hendrix and Santana saw that, like BB King , Mike Bloomfield and Janis Joplin one made a very big impression on the teenager. The New York band Blood, Sweat & Tears , first with Al Cooper and later with David Clayton-Thomas , then changed Louis' musical orientation and sparked his interest in jazz.

At the age of 18, Louis moved to Amsterdam with his brother Elmer Louis, who is also a musician. Established producers like Sylvester Levay , Ralph Siegel , Keith Forsey and jazz musicians like Hannes Beckmann , Dusko Goykovich , Peter Herbolzheimer and Grammy nominee Klaus Doldinger quickly became aware of the young Dutch guitarist.

Grammy winner Joe Gallardo realized that Louis was, in addition to his skills as a guitarist, also an outstanding electric bassist, and hired him for his first European Latin jazz album, Latino Blue .

In 1975, at the age of 21, Louis became a member of the jazz fusion band, Klaus Doldingers Passport . During his four-year collaboration he worked a. a. with globally successful jazz recordings such as Icuacu and Sky Blue ( Ataraxia ) and several national and international tours.

Roy Louis works a. a. with international artists such as Klaus Doldinger's band Passport Peter Herbolzheimer , Joe Gallardo , Roy Ayers , Anita Baker , Stanley Jordan , Isaac Hayes , Thad Jones , Toots Thielemanns , The O'Jays , Lou Rawls , Stevie Woods , Jeff Lorber , Gerald Allston , Manfred Krug , Joy Fleming , Phyllis Hyman , Najee , Teddy Riley & Guy, Mickey Howard , Vesta Williams , Dianne Reeves together. He has also worked for pop musicians such as Donna Summer , Jennifer Rush , Silver Convention , Penny McLean , Boney M and Sting .

In addition, as a composer, arranger and producer, Roy Louis has added his music to commercials. He was also a studio musician for numerous jingles and TV crime series / films and the Klaus Doldinger soundtracks for “ Tatort ” and “ Das Boot ” and Michael Ende's “ The Neverending Story ”.

He earned a Bachelors Degree of Music and a Major in Jazz Composition & Arranging from Berklee College of Music in Boston .
