Maria Natália Guterres Viegas Carrascalão da Conceição Antunes (born December 24, 1952 on the Fazenda Algarve , Leotala , municipality Liquiçá , Portuguese Timor ) is a Portuguese politician and East Timorese diplomat.

Life

Carrascalão studied law at the Universidade Ásia Oriental in Macau , but did not graduate. She is currently continuing her studies at the Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e in Dili .

From 1971 to 1974 Carrascalão worked for the Statistical Office in Portuguese Timor. After the Carnation Revolution , the colony was prepared for independence, but in 1975 it was occupied by Indonesia . Carrascalão worked in the National Statistical Institute in Lisbon from 1975 to 1981 . In 1982/83 she taught at Wetheril College and Liverpool College of TAFE in Sydney, Australia . From 1983 to 1986 and from 1990 to 1998 Carrascalão worked in the Macau Public Service. In between, she worked in Darwin for the Australian immigration authorities and the Telephone Interpreter Service (TIS), among other things as a translator. From 1998 to 1999, Carrascalão worked as an advisor to the Board of Directors of Cintra .

From October 25, 1999 to October 14, 2009, Carrascalão was a member of the Portuguese Parliament for the Portuguese PSD . In the 8th legislative period (1999 to 2002) for Porto , in the IX. Legislative period (2002 to 2005) for Faro and in the 10th legislative period (2005 to 2009) for Santarém . She was also a city councilor in Sintra in 2002/03 .

In 2006, Carrascalão was Technical Advisor to the Union of Capitals of the Portuguese- Speaking Countries ( União das Cidades Capitais de Língua Portuguesa ) and worked as an entrepreneur from 2006 to 2007. From 2007 to 2009, Carrascalão was head of cabinet of the East Timorese President José Ramos-Horta .

From September 24, 2009 to December 31, 2013, Carrascalão was Ambassador for East Timor in Lisbon and responsible for Portugal, Spain and from November 18, 2009 for Cape Verde . From 2014 Carrascalão worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of East Timor as coordinator for the preparation of the summit of the heads of state of the CPLP . She later became president of the Unidade de Implementação Academia de Artes e Indústrias Criativas Culturais .

On December 15, 2016, Carrascalão was appointed East Timor's first ambassador to Laos . In 2020 she moved to Singapore as the new ambassador . On March 24th, Carrascalão presented her accreditation to Singapore's President Halimah Yacob .

Private

Natália Carrascalão Antunes is married and of Roman Catholic faith. She speaks Portuguese , Tetum , English, Spanish and French . After her engagement in Portugal, she now lives again in East Timor's capital Dili.

She is one of 14 children of the Portuguese exile Manuel Viegas Carrascalão and his Timorese wife Marcelina Guterres . Several important East Timorese politicians came from the Carrascalão family .
